Can you fit 2 adults and 3 children on a tuk tuk ?

Is there just one back seat to share? 2 adults (one large one petite) 3 petite children aged 5, 7 and 8? Would this be unsafe, uncommon or even illegal?

There are two back seats so no problem. The Thais have no problem fitting a family of 5 onto a motorbike so certainly no problems in a tuk tuk :)

sorry ignore my above post. I was thinking about Phuket tuk tuks which are totally different to a standard tuk tuk. However you still should be ok

You'll see a lot of families on a tuk tuk.

Are tuktuks safe? No definitely not.

Having said that everytime we're in Thailand we use them, only a family of 3 though (Mum, Dad and 14 yr old) and can just fit together on the seat. So you could have the 2 youngest children on your laps.

We always are amazed at our own lack of concern - at home we wouldnt ever consider travelling without the safety of seatbelts, but "when in Rome....."

You would definitely need a 'larger' tuk tuk for a family of five. In Hua Hin there are quite a few with two bench seats facing each other which would easily accommodate a family of five. However, I don't remember seeing them in Chiangmai. We were three adults - me, my husband and adult son and really only just fitted into the tuk tuk, with a bit of a squash! I don't think the lap thing is a good idea. But you could always flag down two and split up?

Don't let a couple of dollars stand in your way, hire two Tuk-Tuks.

We have found with our two boys that the four of us can fit - that was when they were younger - now one is a teen we don't fit anymore in the back. The driver always gets him to sit on the battery (next to the driver). This is against my better judgement.

I think with three kids the advice above is correct - you will fit if you put one of them on your lap.

I wouldn't put a really young child on the battery.

I can only imagine the insurance claim if something went wrong.
