How many days should I spend in Chiang Mai?

Myself and my friend (both 21) are travelling around Thailand in August for the first time. We are on a tight budget and have found flights for £24 to travel down to Phuket after, which is where we're heading afterwards to see the islands. Therefore we think we would be better booking the flights now in case they go up in price since they were about £70 last time I checked! Therefore, how many days would you recommend we stay in Chaing Mai for (bearing in mind we only have 3 weeks in Thailand in total) - ideally we want to go elephant trekking, white water rafting and tiger kingdom so is 2 nights and 3 full days enough or should we stay longer? Any recommendations on what else to see there would also be helpful. Thanks!

No. Two days is not enough. With three weeks in Thailand I would suggest at least 5 days in CM. You'll be surprised at how much there is to do, how cheap it is and how great the city is for eating, exploring, massages etc.

Have a look at the FAQ on the top right of the page - the top 20 things to do has loads of suggestions from lots of forum members and will give you an overview.

Hi,

As suggested 4 or 5 days. You could add on a day or two extra if you visit Chiang Dao, a scenic mountainous area 1,5 hours away by bus.

You will love CM and find heaps to do. Also, it is much less expensive than Phuket, so give yourself enough time for shopping and spa treats!

I agree! Chiang Mai is so cheap to visit and so much to do and see that it's worth spending time there.

We spent a week there and want to go back to see and do more.
