Chiang Mai to Bangkok self drive

Hi - I'm thinking about renting a car in Chiang Mai and drive our way back to Bangkok (dropping the car off at the airport, so don't have to drive in city centre). Just wondered if anybody has done it this way round before and has any recommendations for routes, places to stop and car rental companies?

Budget provided me with a quote but are asking for several hundred pounds deposit upfront, is this normal?

The drive is not bad, 4 lane highway the whole way. Or back roads if you prefer (get the regional ThinkNet maps).

For stops, you mighty spend a couple of days midway at Sukhothai, exploring the ruins there, as well as Kamphaeng Phet and Sri Satchanalai. Maybe check out the monkey temple at Khao Noi (between Kamphaeng Phet and Nakon Sawan).
