Koh Samui vs Krabi in August

I am travelling with my daughters (15 and 24) for our first trip to Thailand. We have had a nightmare time with our travel agent, which has made me question everything he said. I asked for a quietish resort but still with things to do and he suggested Krabi. He seemed so knowledgeable that I trusted his opinion. But now I'm not so sure. The manager is now dealing with the trip and we still need to book the hotel for the last stage, reading reviews I'm not sure Krabi is the best place for August (13th - 19th). Whilst I agree that it seems to be beautiful and quieter than other more tourist resorts the weather is against it.

Can anyone help? We would like boat trips, good food, beautiful beaches, away from heavily commercialised or touristy areas. Staying in Krabi we had chosen the Centara Grand but have not had time to look into anything in Samui.

Thank you!

Samui is the better destination for that time of year. Have a look at the Centara Grand in South Chaweng.

Hi

Koh Samui weather will best that time of year but from what you're describes maybe koh phagan will suite you best. However as I love koh Samui is only some part you will see a little bit with commercialize but there's plenty of beaches to choose from both quiet and lively oh and somewhere between. In koh Samui you can do all activity you mentions above as well.

Good luck

Koh Samui / Phangan / Tao far better weather at that time of year

Krabi would be rainy season and in particluar to get to best beaches you need to take a boat, which can be a problem at that time of year.

Some of these travel agents do not even know the basics such as weather / seasons !!

Koh Samui is very good during this period. And if you really want to be situated away from the touristy places, there are plenty of other beaches like Choeng Mon beach, Fisherman Village, Bophut that you can stay in. And there are many good hotels available as well.

If you like Centara grand in krabi then perhaps have a look at Centara grand in south chaweng beach. The resort are right on the beach nice and quie with white soft sand calm and clear water good for swimming. Within the resort you wont notice much of what's going on outside. From there you can walk to bars and restaurants along the beach. Also have a look at cheong mon beach is a lot quieter there.

Bophut area are close to fisherman village plenty of up market types of places for meals and drinks but if you're beach person and like to swim in the ocean the beach in bophut are not the best.

Definitely Koh Samui in August and South Chaweng is the quiet part of Chaweng with a great beach so that would be my choice.

Weather wise Koh samui would be better in August. The seas currents can be very dangerous in the Andaman sea in July/August and it will rain more at that time of year.

If you don't want to be in the touristy or commericalised areas, then don't book anywhere in any of the 3 areas of Chaweng. Choeng Mon or Maenem sound like they might be better areas for you to consider. Still relatively undeveloped and less commercialised than other parts of Samui. Chong Mon has a lovely beach and both areas still retain a thai feel. Bhoputs also lovely but the sand isn't as talcum powder textured as south Chaweng but then the trade off is is that even the quieter of the 3 areas which is South Chaweng is probably more busy and commericalised than you would like.
