JET SKI SCAM - Koh Samui - Chaweng Beach

Hi !

I just got back from a trip to Koh Samui and was unfortunately involved in a JET SKI Scam.

Me and 5 of my friends rented jet skis and paid about 850 baht for 30 mins, little did we know what we were getting into.

In the middle of the ocean, while the jet skis were stationary they barely touched each other due to a wave. I dont think that the touch was even enough to cause a scratch.

Anyways, we get back to the beach and the "boys" inspect the Jet skis and say we have damaged one of them and points to a SCRATCH on one of the jet skis. We feel that it may have been caused by us and offer to pay 1000 odd baht.

At this point the "boys" call the owner who comes and starts acting really angry. Considering there were 6 of us we also get all angry and an argument starts.

At one point in the argument the Boss of the jet ski place picked up a beer bottle and almost broke it on my head, he was looking at another man with him and asking him if he should. I also took an aggresive stance and i think that is the only thing which prevented them from getting violent.

I called the Police but guess what - THEY NEVER SHOWED UP.

I called up AMARI, Koh Samui where we were staying and they said they could not do anything to help and just advised us to try and get the jet ski people with us to the hotel for our safety.

The jet ski company is on CHAWENG BEACH, right in front of this place called THE LIBRARY.

Finally we talk our way out and ask him to come to the hotel.

He comes to the hotel after an hour and demands 20000 Baht !!!!

We talk to the manager of the hotel who tries to reason with him and he gives us a discount of 2000 Baht but still insists on 18000 baht.

When we refuse to pay he wants us to go with him to the police.

At this point we ask for the General Manager of Amari Hotel being sure that a senior person would be able to do something.

He advises us not to go to the police in ANY circumstance as that would make things more expensive with even the police demanding money, also the JET SKI owner can file a case on the basis of the agreement he made us sign and the police would ask for our passports and we would not be allowed to leave the country till we somehow pay.

We asked what would happen if we refused to pay and all he said was that it would get VERY nasty and even the hotel would not be able to help. Basically the JET SKI Owner would get lots of local boys and things would get very violent.

Basically we were told to PAY and finish this mess.

Looking at NO other possibility, we asked the general manager to get a local person to help negotiate, he got his F&B manager who was from KOH SAMUI and he brokered a deal for 15000 BAHT

Imagine paying 15000 BAHT for a scratch which also i think we didnt cause BUT HAD TO PAY.

In short NEVER EVER RENT A JET SKI IN THAILAND. Specially the one on CHAWENG BEACH in front of THE LIBRARY.

And imagine threatening tourists with breaking beer bottles on their head.

The Police, Government, Local People are all involved.

EVERYONE should STOP VISITING THAILAND completely.

I would NEVER go there again.

I'm sorry to what happened to you. But there are many thread warnings about jetski and motor bike scam throughout Phuket, koh Samui, Pattaya and many places where the tourists congregated. There's always sharks. However as much as I feel for you. You should have done your home work. I don't think you would go to the new places without do some research of pros and cons what you should do what to avoids. Some time I wonders why we never seen you before on the forum or ask any others questions but when something went wrong or not your way. Then we hear about it. Having said that I'm truly sorry for your bad experience.

I agree with sweetpea, lack of basic research or ignoring the easily available information is no reason to avoid Thailand completely.

Any country you visit has it's pickpockets, scammers, thugs, not just Thailand.

It's not always possible to avoid them, but some very easy and basic checking would have avoided this one.

I find if amazing that people still rent jet skiis in Thailand. These scams have been going on on every beach in Thailand for years. A word to the wise, the jetshi scammers always win, once you sign the rental agreement you are screwes. NEVER rent jet skiis in Thailand.

It's not only in Thailand that this happens but as sweetpea says you should have come here before your trip and got more info, if you had I doubt you would've rented the jet skis.

Happens but as long as you pay it will continue. I would have called their bluff and gone to the police.

If u want to use: take photos before, don't use actual name or correct hotel info on form, inform them u are worried about scam before rented, note any damage prior and have them flip jetski, never ever bump another jetski, never jetski close to shore always out in the middle in deep waters.

One day I stumbled onto TA after doing a search on Thailand and have been hooked ever since. Unfortunately most tourists go to their travel agents or go on line and book a holiday without doing the sort of research everyone is suggesting. I guess it's understandable. We trust people at tourist resorts to do the right thing, we trust restaurants not to give us food poisoning and we trust airlines to deliver us to these destinations without any serious issues. I suppose what I'm trying to say is that by far the majority of tourists have never heard of trip advisor so never see the warnings about tuk tuks, jet skis, time share scams etc. They book holidays with an element of trust. Naive? maybe, but maybe we shouldn't be too critical.

Really?! You didn't think to come here before your trip and not just post of your woes after? A quick 2 min forum search would have saved you a heap of money. Its one of the most well known scans. As for telling people never to visit Thailand well that is plain stupid! I have managed two trips without bringing ripped off. The majority of Thais are lovely honest people. Don't discount a whole country just because you had one bad experience that honestly could have been completely avoided had you done dons one basic homework.

Its a well known scam and if you look at the FAQs on the right hand side of this page, jet skim scams in Chaweng is listed there. Sorry for your troubles but if if highlights the problem to other new visitors to Thailand then perhaps your post might save them from going through the same experience.

All the advice your hotel manager gave you was spot on and you were lucky you had him you to help out as I fear you would have found yourself in a much stickier situation had you stood your ground and refused to pay. Sadly many jet skis in Thailand are owned by the thai "mafia" and threats, violence and a trip to jail are not uncommon if you refuse to pay for damage that more often than not you didn't cause. However, please don't judge all thai people by the Mafia scum that run the jet skis. They're organised criminal gangs and and have their own set of rules and values, quite distinct from those shared by the majority of the general population.
