Help with location

Hi I'm planning a trip for me and other half for march 2013 but am struggling with which area to stay in? Would like a nice CLEAN beach but also good access (walking or short taxi at most) to good local restaurants. Looked at tongsai bay but it seems a bit out of the way? Although the beach looks great! Also how is it getting around on the island? Is there plenty to see and do? Many thanks in advance, nick

Hi there

For the best beach

Cheongmon beach convenience If stay at Tongsai bay form what I have read from twiggyrex the TA member she said about 10-15 mins walk.

South chaweng beach convenicne for bars and restuarants within walking distance.

Chaweng noi beach quiet not much around you will need taxi or songtheaw to and from the main shopping and places to eat.

For things to do and see plaese read FAQ ont he right hand corner of this page and on top of this page. You will find plenty of useful informations there.

Get around is very easy you can engage the taxi driver or songhteaw driver to drive you around make sure you are negotiates the price before hand. Or ou can drive yourself by hire a car form your resort or from the company the like of Avis, budget, Herzt which all operate from koh Samui airport. You will need international driving permit for travel insurance purposes and by laws.

I know that people knock Chaweng but hotels in South Chaweng have the best beach on the island, the area between Samui Paradise and Banana Fan Resort, we stay at Poppies and the Centara which is practically next door and wouldn't stay anywhere else.

Koh Samui's not going to be the same as places such as Bangkok Or Chiang Mai where there's loads of temples, hill tribes and sighseeing. There are various places offering animal shows but they're gross, squalid and inhumane and best avoided. If you look on the right hand side of the page you'll see a things to do icon. Click on that and you'll get a good idea of what's on offer around Samui and if you click on the individual things to do, you'll see TA reviews for each of them. The one I'd recommend is island hopping around neighbouring islands to Snorkle.

Koh Samui has lots of noisy nightlife in and around Central Chaweng and there's hundreds of restaurants , bars and shops in the various resorts around the island. Overall however, Samui is very much a laid back beach holiday kind of place.

You're right Tongsai is great and so is the beach but the sand is grainy (not talcum powdered textured which is what a lot of people dream of). However, its lovely and clean, very peaceful and as you can only reach it via the resort, its effectively a private beach so no annoying hawkers or stray dogs. The grounds are stunning, service is exceptional but its not the place to stay if you want a busy action packed, in the heart of it kind of place. Its the place to stay if you want some serious R+R and like being pampered and spoiled rotten.

The closest place to eat and drink from Tongsai is Choeng Mon beach which is downhill going and uphill coming back. Its about 15 minutes walk downhill. Never tried walking uphill - its too hot and I'm too lazy so we use a cab and its about 2 minutes drive. The bigger resorts of Chaweng and Bhoput are 10 minutes by cab. They have a cab company on site.

Getting around the island is easy. Car hire's easy and cheap or you can catch the local taxis (songthew) which circle the ring road around the island. If you're lazy you can also hire a taxi for the day to take you round the island.

Hope this helps.
