Bangkok to Koh Samui on the day train?

We arrive late in the evening at Bangkok so will spend the night, as we want to get the only day train, departing Bangkok at 08:05, as advised on http://www.seat61.com/Thailand.htm#Ko Samui

We have booked the night at Hua Lamphong Hostel (so we can just walk across the road in the morning to the train station)

The train gets to Suart Thani at 16:45. Last ferry departs Don Sak at 19:00, to arrive at Koh Samui at 20:30.

I've read train delays are common in Thailand. Is the timetable above manageable ? Just a little concerned that if the train is too late we might struggle to get that last ferry, and be stuck in Surat Thani.

The hostel we are staying at can pre-book trains tickets etc, so I asked about the above and their first response was that you can't take the train and get to Koh Samui on the same day. They being locals I assume they know what they are talking about, but as far I can find out on train and ferry websites the above timetable does exist.

Has anybody managed to do the above ? Is it still only THB 778 for the package ?

Hi,

Trains are frequently one or even two hours late. Last time I went to Surat Thani by rail was on a night train which was 1.5 hours late. Do be aware that the journey from the railway station to the pier is another 1.5 hours. I wouldn't chance it, spend a day in Bangkok and take the night train.

Hi

I agree with the above. Is there any reason for the train? If you're main objective is to get to Koh Samui that day then you could fly or using the Lomprayah bus and ferry service. If a train journey, specifically, is required then as above wait and take the night train.

Chosen as a day train would be the cheapest way to get to Koh Samui. We thought there would be some good views on the way down? Is the train really that terrible and unreliable?

We are already booked and paid for accommodation that night in Koh Samui.

We have expensive flights booked for leaving Koh Samui, so wanted to get there cheaper (as no discounts on return flights).

Yes trains often get in late so you could be pushing your luck, if you decide to do this you should factor in a possible overnight stay in Surat Thani.

Also note that this route is popular on the overnight train and tickets go on sale 60 days before date of travel so you would need to book well in advance to ensure getting a sleeper, you can book online at Asia Discovery who have proven to be reliable. You could, of course, take the night boat which is certainly an interesting and different way to get to Samui, it leaves Ban Don Pier in Surat Thani around 11pm and gets into Samui in the early hours around 5am. It's quite a basic boat with mattresses provided with clean sheets and pillows, locals use it mostly for transporting goods and it's cheap - you would probably make this without any trouble. Another option would be to head to Don Meuang Airport on the night you arrive, stay overnight there (closest hotel is Amari Airport) and then get the Air Asia flight to Surat Thani the next morning with a bus and boat transfer, first flight leaves at 7am and costs around 1000B- Nok Air also do a flight via Chumphon and you can buy bus and ferry connections with both airlines online.

Thanks for all the answers. Will take your advise not risk the day train due to possible delays. The best option was to take the AirAsia package which includes island transport. We depart Don Mueang (DMK) at 14:45, land at Nakhon Si Thammarat (NST), bus to Donsak Pier, ferry to Lipa Noi Pier, Koh Samui, arriving at 19:30, all for the cost of THB 1750.11. We now have half a day to stroll around Bangkok, and arrive at Koh Samui an hour earlier than originally planned.
