Money exchange rate

Visiting in a few weeks from Australia and wondering what to do about exchanging our money. Do we take a card and use ATMS and cop the fees or would it be better to take AUD and exchange in Koh Samui or even Bangkok airport? Just wondering where we would get the best rate. Any advice welcome. Thanks.

AUS $20.00 = approx. 589 THB

AUS $10.00= approx. 295THB.

i work on allowing $20.00= 600THB to round off.

just to give a general costing.

At Phuket ( patong or koh samui )the exchange is similar. Make sure you are not cheated.

Have a look at the Top Question FAQ on the right "FOREX & Money Options" that gives you all the advice you need. You will always get a better rate in Thailand than at home. Rates at the airport may be a little lower than in town so just change enough for immediate needs.

Hi Dianne. We've just been in Koh Samui and we took approx $500 in baht with us from Aus, and then we took some aud with us and exchanged when we wanted. Heaps of exchange booths everywhere and getting approx 29.7 baht to the dollar.

Happy travels!

We always take AUD cash and use a fee-free credit card for major items at reputable places.

The exchange rate in Suvarnabhumi airport is about .5Bt per AUD less than other areas unless you go down the the Airport Rail Link level and use the bank booth that is on the ARL side of the demarcation. Rates in the airport are all at the Thai Military Bank (TMB) rate, which are always the lowest of the banks

Rates on Samui last week have been mostly 29.7, 29.8, 29.9.

Though the most risky, cash is best if looking for good rates and no fees. Exchange booths everywhere with rates displayed clearly. Change a small amount once you arrive in Thailand at an airport then find a good rate at a bank booth in town.

If using ATMs you will be charged about $6 AUD per withdrawl by the Thai banks (no way around this).

Your own bank may or may not charge another fee for O/S withdrawl.

Citbank Aus offer a fee free Visa Debit card for use overseas if you can get 1 in time.
