When to book & who with from UK

Thinking of coming to from UK in August 2015 with family (hubby & kids 11 & 8). We travelled to Phuket last October with Hayes & Jarvis & got a great deal. Prices for August don't seem to be out yet. Is there anybody from UK who can give advice on when they book & approx price to expect in August? We like the look of the Centara at Chaweng or open to similar child friendly suggestions? Thanks

Hi

Can't help with the UK price but for child friendly apart from Centara grand in south chaweng. There's Amari plam reef in northern chaweng. Another popular with young children is The Imperial boathouse in cheongmon beach.

I think most people on here book their flights & hotels themselves, rather than buying a packaged holiday

Hi

LOL, we book it all ourselves, and have done for years.

We normally, using skyscanner, start shopping around for the 'best flights for us' - best for us might not be cheapest but is also departure time and length of flight. Flights start to come out 320 days before you are due to fly home. If you are going on 1 August and coming home on 14 August then the flights will be out 320 days before 14 August.

We don't just look at flights to Bangkok, but also Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Phuket! Yes, fly into Phuket!!

We normally book our international flights around the 300 days before the we leave. You can get some cracking deals.

We then decide where you want to go - although we normally have bit of a plan in mind.

We don't book things like hotels and internal flights until around 2-3 months beforehand.

Again we book these ourselves - and we do take out the airlines cheap insurance just means we can get back to catch our international flights as most insurance policies issued form the UK only cover flights to and from the UK. We use whatever airline works out best for us - price / time / flight length.

Booking hotels is shopping around via hotelscombined.com to see the better deal for us within our budget. There is some great research information on Trip Advisor - the reviews are useful but bear in mind what the issues are and the impact on you.

Something like the Centara Grand we often contact the hotel directly for a price, and have normally booked directly with them! They do offer an early bird offer if you book and pay in full early you get a pretty good discount!!!

Transfer to and from the airport are so easy, and you either pay a fortune to the travel agent for what is cheap locally, book via the hotel (a bit inflated), you prebook a company like Samui Island Explorer or you just get a taxi from the counter when you get there.

Don't think anyone can say what you will pay in August 2015, the only thought would be what is selling at this August. Why not do a test booking?

Happy to give some guidance if needed. Once you book it yourself you will be addicted as you realise the freedom of it and wonder why you didn't do it years ago!!

We have done it ourselves, but have also used Trailfinders who are very good

Trailfinders or Kuoni. Both generally offer free nights and other goodies, so their prices are competitive. I've priced up holidays myself using a variety of airline and hotel booking sites and its never been any cheaper than the prices quoted by either of the above companies.

Hi, the last two long haul holidays we took were booked through a London co called Jasmine Holidays. They are small boutique specialist but are happy to offer tailormade options, with superb and very personal service. On both occasions I found the prices to be similar as plotting it myself piecemeal but Jasmine got us better spec on room/meals and we didnt have to worry about transfers.

In the past we have used both Kuoni and Travelbag. Both will offer tailor made options with Travelbags tending to be the cheaper usually.

Whichever option you choose, the earlier you can secure your main flight the better, the closer you get to your date the more expensive they become. For instance on one occasion they jumped up £90 each in 24 hours, even though we were about 3 months away from our intended dates.

Happy hunting!

I used Travelbag Asia for my trip. Couldn't fault them and much cheaper than Thomas Cooke etc.

We don't use an agent at all I should have said. No Trailfinders, travelbag, travelmood etc. I buy our tickets through who ever has them at the price we want to pay for the times etc.

We normally get all the extras too!

Personally I book my flights pre Xmas, when the flight sales are on, through Netflights or this year Westeast travel (their prices were unreal!) and hotels direct and through www.sawadee.com any time after February for a June break. I've done this for years as I found the hotels I wanted weren't available in package deals.

I know others who swear by Travelbag and won't use anyone else in the UK.

For a child friendly hotel also look up Imperial Boat House, Choeng Mon as Pea suggests.

Hello,

I never, ever book a package to Thailand. To be able to give you a good deal travel companies have to compensate with something.

If the package has good flights (times and airline quality... etc) the will compromise on the accommodation or vise versa.

I usually use Kayak to find the flights I want. It's usually much cheaper if book open-jaw ticket.

Example:

London - Kuala Lumpur

Bangkok - London

Or

London - Bangkok

Koh Samui - London

Or

Paris - Koh samui

Bangkok - London

and so on...

And then book single flights with Bangkok Air or MH etc.

There also little tricks when booking flights:

If you have chance start your long haul flight in the middle of the week. Tuesday is almost always the cheapest.

Try not to book the most common lengths ... 7, 10, 14 day etc... Odd combinations when you fly with same airline are cheaper.

For me when to book your flights to get the price is myth. I just know what a good price is and once I see flights around or below it I just book.

Always try to book with reputable companies when you decide to book with 3rd party and you can't direct with the airline (the cheapest option might end up being the most expensive if something goes wrong).

When booking accommodation I found out that every site has a country or region with better prices.

For Koh Samui for example travelbag has the best prices. (Just personal experience). or sawadee.

You have to spend some time researching and you can save a lot. I also enjoy the whole process as equal as the holiday itself :)

If you need help please let me know and will be happy to assist with particular dates.

Kind regards,

Chris
