The Truth about Baan Chang

For some unknown reason most TA members refer to this establishment as the elphant rehab or Baan Chang. The truth is it is not a rehab center nor have the owners of this elephant trekking organization ever claimed it to be so.

The real name of this company is Kok Chang Safari. For those of you who want to visit and have tried to find out where this establishment is located (quite a few of you have PM'd me) all the tuk tuk drivers and taxis in the Kata areas know exactly where this is.

For service upon arrival ask to speak to Khun Chaini or Khun Easy - both very relaxed guys, extremely helpful and friendly. Although I prefer to see the gibbons in their more natural environment this is the establishment where Charlie and Lum Yai reside.

Lovely natural environment with cute bar setting overlooking stunning views.

If you go, please do not feed the gibbons.

after the little british girl was dis-enboweled on the end of a bull elephants tusk and died in front of her mom and dad a few years back at the elephant show

the family are still waiting for compensation from the zoo owners

It seems just about everyone calls Baan Chang a rehab, but as Chantal says, it's not a rehab for either elephants or gibbons. It's a typcial tourist operation. Not sure where the misunderstanding got started, but it is well established now, even after quite a few discussioins like this.

There is a real gibbon rehabilitation in Phuket http://www.gibbonproject.org/ but no elephant rehab anywhere on the island.

Dear Fish

There are a lot of people on this forum who do not refer to this place as a rehab centre, (for newbees, there was a very long thread about the name approx a month or so ago, do a search and you will find it). Unfortunately at times people still refer to it as such in their JBR's or questions leading to more confusion, the name is exactly as Chantal states. You can visit on your own at anytime, or visit pre arranged with someone else organising your transport.

The only reason I call the place Baan Chang is well over a year ago there was a sign there with "Baan Chang" on it, (its not there now) so thats the name that has stuck with me, which is fine anyway as its means home for elephants - Baan means home - Chang means elephant. No big deal.

Lovely place to visit and spend a couple of hours.

Yes Guys it is a great place to visit. But at least some of you now know this establishment for what it actually is. This misrepresentation has gone too far and please do not believe it if you hear that a person or people claim(s ) to be a "volunteer" for this "rehab".

Otherwise Cathy as before I compliment you again on your website but I honestly do feel that you should update your page to reveal the true company name as Kok Chang Safari and the true facts about this establishment. Lets set the record straight so that TA members know exactly what they are looking for when they come to Phuket.

Apologies to those who feel offended.

Actually Cathy isnt a travel agent or anything even close. She is just one of us that jumps on here and shares her love of South East Asia. Her website consists of all the info she has gathered through other travellers and herself.... she in no way is paid for her website nor her advice... its just a bonus to have someone like her around.

Well said Reet,

Where would we all be without Cathy, her website is purely for the benefit of fellow travelers and she single handedly provides all this information off her own back with contributions from many fellow travelers. Its a work in progress and Cathy is constantly updating and changing her site for the sole purpose of providing valuable information to all of us. We are all privileged that she shares her experiences with us and we all await the next chapter in her travels.

Cathy was asked to be a Moderator on that other site as she has so much valuable information to pass onto others.

The personal time she gives up for her passion are to be commended.

Keep up the good work Cathy.

Cheers, Pete.
