Easy access & buying og baby needs in Karon beach Phuket?

Hi, we are travelling with a 3 yr old & 1 yr old. (next month.) We are staying at the Horizons in Karon Beach if this helps. The 3 yr old is a fussy eater & the baby eats most food. I am taking a supply of baby foods, nappies, etc. But is there like a 7/11 supermarket (general store)in Karon Beach that will carry nappies, baby food, biscuits,(simple Aussie or American basics) for a young child & baby if we run out or need extras? Or will be have to go into Patong, Or over stock our luggage? All info will be really helpful.

Hi 3 girls, we stayed here last October and found the resort and location fantastic. The Horizon has a little shop underneath reception with a few items for sale, but if you go down to the bottom of the hill, turn left, cross the road and keep walking towards Kata way there's a 7/11 shop. We used this a fair bit for biscuits and drinks etc.

Don't pack too much as at the bottom of the hill turn right the first massage place will do washing very cheaply, we didn't need half the clothes that we took.

Enjoy your stay, Rene

Thanks Ellietia. That is great news there is a 7/11 so close. Any other helpful hints, advice on hotel, etc, would be much appreciated. We are counting down the weeks & so excited. Thanks again!

Hi there, I just finished typing you up a reply that would rival a book and it's disappeared into thin air....They have a free shuttle into Patong that leaves 3 or 4 times a day, just put your name down at the Porters/ Concierge desk, this will drop you off at the Horizon Patong resort and if you want to get the shuttle back to Karon you go into this resort and put your name down for the return journey back to the Horizon Karon. They also have a free tuk tuk service that will take you up and down the hill from the resort. Having 2 young children I'd definitely use it for going back up the hill as it would be a hard slog for them. If you use it to go down the hill hold on to the children tight as one of the drivers goes fast and absolutely flies down the hill.

We found all the restaurants we visited in the Karon and Kata area would modify their cooking for children, not too hot or too spicy, or would leave curry sauce off, if they only felt like a toasted sandwich they'd make them one or just a bowl of hot chips, they were all great with children. Our children's favourite restaurant was "Thai 44", bottom of the hill from the Horizon, Turn right walk past all the massage places then past all the seafood places, the kids loved this place, very friendly staff and casual and relaxed, always people eating here and heaps of different sundaes for desert, and very cheap.

The breakfast staff at the Horizon often took fidgety babies/children and carried them around until their parents finished their breakfasts and children seemed to loved them.

One more thing, the resort has been known to overbook and try and send guests to another resort for the night or a couple of days, this didn't happen to any of us but hopefully they wouldn't try with you having 2 young children but if they do stand your ground and refuse, don't budge, this worked for another couple we were talking to.

Hope this is a start and have a great holiday, Rene

Hi here is an idea in case children what to eat at different times. We take a melamie plate and knife then buy a loaf of bread from 7/11 and get fillings there too or take a jar of vegemite or peanut butter from home that way you can make them a sandwich any time they want. Just grab a couple of butter at breakfast and put in fridge. We are adults and find it handy some days just to be able to have a simple sandwich also you can make a sandwich before going out for the day to take with you.. Bez

Thanks Rene for your informative post. I have just jotted down several of your comments for washing and eating etc... We are going to Phuket for the first time in July staying at this hotel so I have no idea what im in for. Taking hubby and 2 kids 13 and 11.Really looking forward to it.

Did you buys any dvd's local in Karon?

Info about the shuttle bus will be useful im sure. We have 2 lots of friends staying in Patong whilst we are there so we will be back and forward to them.

Anything else I should know about the hotel, area etc...?

Thanks again

Jane, glad the info was useful. We bought all our Dvd's from a guy in Karon/Kata. You go to the bottom of the hill, turn left and keep walking in the Kata direction. He's right next to a shop that has some paintings, theres a camera shop and my son said a tour desk. He's got a stand of dvds out the front but will take you to a back room full of dvds. Across the road is the 7/11 shop. What we brought we took back to the Horizon and tested them out on the dvd player in our room. (The rooms have dvd players in them). They all worked bar 1 or 2 so we took them back to him and he exchanged them for us. 50 to 60 baht each depending on how many you buy.

We did the majority of our shopping in the Kata area and when we went into Patong on the shuttle we shopped at the O Top markets.

Heres some photo's of our trip, theres some of the Horizon, Karon beach and Dino golf which isn't far away from the Horizon and the kids loved it.

Hi Jane, I asked this before, most people said, check money changers rates & comissions, use Atms, they are in Karon & PAtong, some people said the banks are good, but don't use the hotels as always low rate & comission charges. Good luck..... Ps. they said if you can get between 27 & 30 baht for the Oz dollar your doing well........ Hope this helps.
