Ranong visa run from Phuket

Hello all!

I am Australian and need an extra 30 days stamped in my passport.

I read in Lonely Planet that I can take a day trip into Burma from Ranong.

However, we will be travelling from Phuket. Can a visa run starting in Phuket be done in a day (long day) or do we need to stay in Ranong for a night? What is the easiest way to get from Phuket to Ranong

Also, is this Ranong border still open for visa runs?

Thank you for any information!

Might help if you told us how long you intend staying in Thailand, we are staying 3 months and do not need to do a visa run, just needed to extend out 2 month tourist visa, which can be done in Phuket.

If your staying longer than that yes it can be done in one day to Ranong.

It's a fairly long day to do the visa run, and I wouldn't call it a "day trip"! It is typically about 12-14 hours with most of it in a van or bus. Usual price is about B1500 plus US$5 (when I went several years ago - but I think US$10 these days - the fees for stamping in/out of Myanmar).

There are always several places advertising in the Phuket Gazette, not difficult to find one. I would recommend though, the run that takes a large bus as it is a LONG drive both ways and some visa runs send a small van and you will be stuffed in like a sardine. Uncomfortable for such a long day on the road.

You'll usually spend, at most, about 45 minutes to an hour in the small town across the water from Ranoung.

The little town is interesting though - as is the water taxi to get there. There is one, more expensive, visa run that spends one the night on a small island in the area there - with a casino/hotel - though I hear the place is nothing special.

You could do it on your own, perhaps in more comfort than being crammed into a minivan. Air conditioned government-licensed bus from Phuket bus terminal to Ranong 5 hours, 185 baht. Transport to the pier, I dunno, 30 baht. But staying overnight would probably be necessary. Ranong is an interesting town...
