box jellyfish

Ok Ok I have been following the forum and i am now concerned about box jellyfish what is going on??. Im due over their in 15 days time and my concerns were always about trivial things, now i am truly concerned about the bloody jellyfish. I have not heard one single thing about the little buggers until now. We expect to spend alot of our holiday swimming at the ocean and now im nervous. How bad is this really? Is there at this present time any warning signs posted on the revelent beachs or do we just all hope for the best? Or should we ask the locals at the beach itself or do we just purely swin only at the hotel pool? What do we do?

Papaya, why do you have to be such a smart mouth?

why couldn't you have just pointed sherryAustralia to other threads on the same subject?

Get a grip papaya, you just scaremongering now for the sake of enjoyment, why would you they to make people fearful? Do you not want them to enjoy the holiday?

Yes you have to take a few precautions if you want and its better to know than not, but u might as well go and say that you should be careful because a meteorite may hit Earth tomorrow?!

Get a life!

Hi sherryA...I absolutely would not let this unvalidated report worry you. My two daughters are going to be in Phuket the exact same time as yourself and if I was at all concerned about this (AND I REALLY HATE JELLYFISH) I would certainly let them know about it. What I would say to them and you also is to use common sense. Best to wait until you arrive and have all the facts before you make a decision. Please dont let this spoil your trip to a beautiful destination. As you mentioned you can always swim in the hotel pool. Hubby and myself are heading over in 4 weeks time and would absolutely not give this report a second thought. Enjoy your trip even if you dont swim at the beach.

Papaya, what are you here for? You should be deleted for your stupid comments.

Sherry, check the other threads on Box Jellyfish - not including the apparently false post by Papaya. Yes, Box Jellyfish have been found in Phuket waters, all but one so far found on the east coast, at a bay near Phuket Town. Three different species have been so far identified - the single tentacle type, the multiple tentacle and the new small, short tentacle one recently found in large numbers. We found a box jellyfish at the northern end of Bang Tao Bay, the first and only one so far found on the west coast. The chances of being stung by a box jellyfish on the west coast are unlikely at this time. No one knows whether they will migrate around the cape in the future. This year has been a particularly bad year for jellyfish in Phuket. Read the article on the link below and other related articles are listed underneath.

The PhuketWan Newspaper is the one that Dr Somchai from the Phuket Marine Biological Centre liaises with and shares all news of jellyfish sightings/updates with.

If you are really concerned, think about getting stinger suits, but if you have no problems with wearing pantyhose with your swimwear, those also work and ensure you keep a bottle of vinegar with you when swimming.

Thankyou All, For your caring support. With the exception of PAPAYA!!!!. I thought this was a great site for individuals to communicate and pass on true and wise info. Just for your information PAPAYA, i have not had a holiday in 7 years and it took me a very long time to save for this trip. If you have nothing better to do than laugh at my expence for asking questions that you obviously find a big joke, maybe you you find a more immature site to have chats on. My holiday is precious to me and i believe i am entitled to want to know the best info possible.
