Ok finally I am near the end of this huge trip report, never again will I leave it to the end, it’s too hard trying to condense 5 mths into 3 reports lol.
I needed some dental work, nothing major just a huge crown, 1 inlay overlay, a small filling. I have private health here in Australia but even using that I was up for close to $1400 out of my own pocket. So after much advise from members etc that have had dental in Phuket, I went checking out a few of their recommendations. In the end it was all too hard so I started looking at places near our hotel.
A new place had just opened call The Dental Corner at 69 Rat-u-Thit Rd (towards the northern end), I wasn’t looking for the cheapest place just somewhere and someone I felt comfortable with. The initial checkup was free & x-rays were 150baht. I went for a gold crown and this cost 15,000baht.
It was a lot of work preparing the tooth beforehand, removing the old filling, putting in a temp etc. This would be the first time ever I have not felt a needle in my mouth, the dentist was fantastic, so gentle. The crown is made in Bangkok & when it arrived all I could think was wow that would have made a nice ring ha-ha.
My inlay overlay was also quite big, I had a tooth colored porcelain one and this was 9000baht. The small filling was 1000 and clean and polish 1000baht. Three months later all is good and I was better off by quite a few hundred dollars. I would definitely go back to her again for checkups etc. They have a price list on their website:
Quite a few friends had clothes made at Grace Land Collection on Chalermprakiat Rd, more commonly known as Soi Eden and were very happy with the quality and price. Our daughter also bought some photos over from Scotland of some work dresses & tops she wanted made. The dresses were 150 pound each to buy there! Her partner also had a couple of suits plus a jacket made. The clothes were just beautiful and exactly the same as the photos. I am waiting for photos of their clothes & will post when I receive them.
I have a favorite stretch top I had bought at the Espirit shop in Central Festival for $70 but it only came in one color, so I thought I would have one made at Grace Land. They had so many fantastic colors in stretch fabric that I couldn’t decide between 3 of them. Solution was to have 3 made ha-ha. Then I saw a nice pair of ¾ pants in a magazine, once again, couldn’t decide on colors so ended up ordering 3 pairs in cashmere silk. The price for everything was 11,000baht.
I went back for one fitting and a couple of days later all was perfect. The tops are far nicer quality & better made than the original one from Espirit! I was so happy with everything that I am now saving pictures etc of dresses I want them to make next year lol. If you do go there ask for Dill, he is such a nice guy and extremely helpful.
We had a few fun nights out at the Sunshine bar, nothing has changed there except it looks even better than before & the staff still entertain everyone all night.
First time back there were 11 of us and we hired Daj to pick us up at 5pm and drop us off at the Sea Gypsy Village in Rawai for dinner and to come back to the Sunshine Bar at 11pm and take us all back our hotel. Dinner was fantastic & so cheap, you buy your seafood from the fishermen then take it over to the restaurant & they cook it up for about 70baht. Then we walked the 5 min walk over to the Sunshine Bar. This night out is suitable for anyone, kids love it as much as the adults!
Then Chelle a TA member organized a night out at the Sunshine Bar in October. Now having met Chelle before this we knew this could be a big night out!! So Gary & I decided to check into the Maa Lai Resort in Rawai, it was only 1000baht a night so a holiday from the holiday lol, we checked in for 2 nights.
It was a huge night with about 20 Trip Advisor members, so was fantastic to put names to faces. Thanks as well to Corky for the jeigerbomb which I didn’t really need! I think we finished up about 1pm; thank god the hotel was only 2 mins walk away! It was such a good night so a big thank you to Chelle for organizing it.
The next night Gary & I decided to go back, well I started off not drinking but after a few sprites I tried a Bacardi, boy it was rough, but I persevered. It was just the best ever night talking with the owner Jimi & her husband Thorsten. They are both the most genuine people you could ever meet.
A group of Thai girls were also having a girl’s night out and they latched onto us. It turned out one of them recognized us as she was the receptionist at the hotel we were staying at in Rawai. I asked her what time did we have to check out, she said anytime as she was working till 7pm lol. Boy could those girls knock back the shots!!
Anyway we had another huge night and finished up around 2pm! The Sunshine Bar is closed on Sundays but every other night is party night, don’t know where they get their energy!!
We always go to Patong Tattoo which is owned by 2 brothers Mit & Wat. They are opposite Sabai Beach restaurant. Gary had a small colored tiger head on his arm but now it looks out of place due to the traditional Thai tattoo below it. After many hours of drawing & trying to figure out what looked better it is now covered up with another traditional tiger tattoo.
He also had a 10 hour day of having a big dragon on his back totally redone. Looks amazing now and so much better. I think you have to be crazy to lay there for 10 hours suffering lol. Every year he says no more but ends up with something! Lots of friends also had recent work there; I will leave the link to the photos.
Wat from Patong Tattoo has been doing piercings at the Vegetarian Festival for many years with the help of his brother Mit. One day they asked me if we wanted to go with them and take photos. I didn’t really know anything about this Festival so I googled it. Yikes what did I get myself into, I was terrified and honestly didn’t think I would be able to do it. I don’t like blood and gory things!! Gary said he is not getting out of bed at 4am for anything so I went on my own.
The boys picked me up at 4.30am and we went to the Pa Sak Chinese Temple at Cherng Talay. First thing was breakfast, it was too early for me to start eating noodles & porridge type things so I stuck to one of my favorite drinks cold Thai tea with milk – Cha Yen. It is still dark but there are lots of strange noises here, which I would soon discover were people working themselves up into a sort of frenzy, preparing themselves to be pierced!!
I was still scared as I did not know what to expect, so when the boys started the piercing I stood back taking photos. It only took me a few minutes & them telling me to get in closer and that was it. It was amazing, didn’t make me sick lol, I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
I will never look at a set of steak knives the same again after seeing them through the side of someone’s face, or a massive TV antenna poking thru cheeks. I ended up as close as I could possibly get without being in the way. It’s so hard to describe how this all felt & what it looked like but you will be able to tell from the photos. Just a word of caution if you have a weak stomach don’t look!!
Once the piercings had finished we drove into Phuket Town to the Jui Tui Tao Bo Keang Temple where Wat took me through the various stages of making merit, not as easy as it sounds as there is so much smoke from incense etc I could hardly breathe or see! Then it was outside for tea & coffee. All of this is provided free outside the temple. I had little Chinese ladies coming up to me with plates of food, then laughing at me as some of it was wrapped so strangely I couldn’t open it ha-ha.
After that Wat took me through the temple out into a side street, he pushed me to the front of a group of people, I had no idea what was happening. Then the noise started, well I was about to see my first procession of the Vegetarian Festival. I loved it, I couldn’t take the smile off my face, there were firecrackers going off everywhere, it was so exciting. It started raining but who cares. I couldn’t believe again what I was seeing. After that it was back to the hotel, tired, soaked but happy and it was only 11am!!
So 2 days later we are going with the boys again, Gary has decided to come this time. We had to buy white clothes to wear but that was easy as nearly everyone wears the white fisherman’s pants with a red dragon on one side, white tops and some wear a sash, the boys called it a Buddha belt. They bought us one each!!
Pickup was just after 4.30am, it was hard getting up as stupid us stayed out drinking with friends until about 2am!! Oh well, quick shower and a few panadols!!
Back to the Jui Tui Tao Bo Keang Temple in Phuket Town. We soon realized when we arrived in town that we both had our dragons on the wrong leg, damn we had our pants on back to front lol.
This was a huge morning with many more piercings, even women and a 12 year old boy. As there were other piercers in the same room the boys pointed out a couple who they said were no good! They were talking about hygiene, no gloves, no sterilizing equipment etc etc. Plus we saw a bad piercing from someone who did it to close to the guy’s mouth, needless to say he disappeared and probably ended up in hospital.
After the last piercing we started to help clean up and Wat said to leave it for his brother and family as we had to hurry and follow him. Gary was loaded up with Vaseline and oil and off we went. Straight out into the middle of the parade, Wat was running and we had no choice but to run after him. We thought maybe he is running to get to the first piercings to grease them up etc.
It’s like we are in a marathon, Wat is grabbing bottles of water along the way (and little cakes) and throwing them to us.
Gary & I are ready to have a heart attack after about 20 minutes. We have no idea where we are or where we are going. All we know is Wat is in front of us, looking around and waving us on to hurry. I’m getting scared as there are hundreds of firecrackers going off around me, sometimes I just stopped, put my hands over my head and screamed hahaha.
At one stage I was in front of Gary and looked around, he called me back to hold the oil etc, his fisherman’s pants had come undone and were falling down hahaha.
After what seemed like a lifetime we finally stopped and Wat said we rest now. Gary & I are drenched in sweat, puffing and half dead. Now we found out why we had run all the way through the parade, across Phuket Town to Saphan Hin Temple, Wat wanted us to see the whole parade from beginning to end. If we had the energy left we would have laughed!!! It’s a long way to run in the heat lol.
After that Wat said he has organized the car to pick us up as he thinks we would be dead if we walk back lol. So from there it’s back to meet everyone at a local vegetarian restaurant for some amazing food and liters’ of water.
There are 3 albums of photos from the Festival on the link below:
I loved the Vegetarian Festival and saw things in a different way being with the boys. It is an amazing time in Phuket, not for everyone but I can’t wait for next year’s event. Apparently we are sponsoring so have to walk the parade with someone the boys pierce. Time to get fit now I think!!
Well that’s about it for now, I have missed so many things, like Spa’s & Massages, Kok Chang Safari, Flights etc oh well maybe next year.
