1st time to Thailand. Bangkok and Phuket?

A friend and I are taking our first vacation in Asia and will likely go to Thailand for about 9 days. I was thinking that we'd spend the first few days in Bangkok, explore the culture, learn a little history...and then spend the remainder of the trip in Phuket taking in some sun and truly relaxing.

We will likely go at the end of February/first week in March. Are these two locations (Bangkok and Phuket) the best choices to really get a feel for Thailand, its culture, and its people? What else is there to do in Phuket besides eat, drink and lay on the beach?

Thanks!

Hi there,

There is so much to see and do in Phuket that 2 weeks would only just scratch the surface and the same goes for Bangkok but it all depends on your interests. I would suggest 3 full days in Bangkok to do the major attractions and the rest of the time in Phuket to explore and relax.

Check out the FAQ's to the right of screen "things to see and do" also more information on the left of screen.

Cheers Pete

Bangkok, although fascinating and in all respects one of the great cities of the world, is no more representative of Thailand than New York is of the US. Same for Phuiket. If it is the real Thailand you're looking for, head for Chiang Mai, which is large enough to satisfy urban cravings -- wall-to-wall great restaurants for one thing -- but small enough to allow for the kind of idle walk-abouts that truly reveal a culture.

But there aren't any direct flights from the US to Chiang Mai, are there? Since we have to fly into Bangkok anyway, it just seems to make sense to spend a few days there.

We did three nights in Bangkok and 1 week in Phuket as an introduction to Thailand and it gave us a good overview.

Bangkok being the hectic city tour, shopping and temples with Phuket being more of a relaxing beach holiday.

Whilst north of Bangkok is more cultural.

Phuket is a great choice for relaxing.

Bangkok is hectic, crazy and wonderful.

Hope you love Thailand as much as I do.
