Need to know month of travel to advise properly. Plenty of places we can't afford from December to February we can afford from April to October. "affordable" is a subjective term; state $$$. Also, Phuket has many beaches, are you thinking of one in particular ? Patong, Karon, Kata are the most popular but Bang Tao, Kamala or others can suit, depending on what you want from a holiday. Stick to the West coast.

If you are not going peak season, a good place to start is Kata Beach Resort in Kata (on beach), Holiday Inn in Patong (across the road), or Laguna Beach Resort in Bang Tao Bay (on beach, waterslide, baby elephant).

If you want " on the beach" your options are limited, and of course it depends on your budget, rates vary greatly between high and low season, so you need to say time of year and budget and whether you want it right on the beach or not - for me if I go to a beach place I want to be absolutely right on the beach :)

Sunwing at Bangtao has great facilities

Centara Grand Resort at Karon is also very good but can be pricey

You have options in Karon, Kata, Bangtao, Kamala and Laguna area and others.

Merlin Beach resort is beachfront. Its not a swimming beach more for snorkling.Fantastic pools. You should get good deals for July?August.we went this year in June/july.We booked in January and got stay 16 pay for 8.With 3 kids you would need 2 interconnecting rooms. We got 2 interconnecting deluxe rooms. Its 5 min tuk tuk from Patong.fantastic spot.

The Katathani has some pretty good deals off season and is right on the beach although it gets pretty rough in the off season but there are plenty of pools etc and they cater for kids

In July and August beaches can be red-flagged so choose somewhere with good pool facilities.

If at that time of year you may get a deal at centara Grand Karon which is right on the beach but has good and extensive facilities
