Taxi fares tables? Discuss

We just arrived from koh yao noi to bang rong pier. The bus wasn't coming for a couple hours so we inquired about a taxi. They pointed is to the ubiquitous fare chart which showed the typically astronomical prices, many of which changed with magic marker. We explain that the price is absurd and go to watch the monkeys while waiting for the bus. Lo and behold the price dropped 30%!

While the airport ones seem better prices and somewhat regulated, I am now very skeptical of those fare charts elsewhere and will be negotiating a 25-40% reduction wherever possible.

Any other experiences with this?

They will charge you whatever they think they can get.

And start with the highest they have gotten in the past most likely.

Yes, try to negotiate. But don't get mad. Don't get rude or belligerent.

They will gang up on you.

It's the taxi/tuk tuk mafia and there's not much you can do about it.

A real shame, but that's the way it is here.

If it's raining, or very crowded, prices go up accordingly.

They love when you have no choice.

Good luck.

I'm more interested In the fare charts, and how they're leaned on by the syndicate and trusted by unsuspecting tourists

I think the fares are set by the local 'government'.

No doubt there is a lot of money getting passed around for the privilege. For comparison, just now a flight from Bangkok to Phuket can be had for a little over over 1000thb, expect many people could be paying nearly the same to get from the airport to the beach.

I guess many tourist are comparing the price with what they would pay back home, not realize they are getting a bad deal.

It's become kind of a syndicate, and trusted by unsuspecting tourists. The mistake they make is that the fares don't even compare favorably to most US cities.

Why would the fares compare to most US cities or any other country's fares? They don't even compare between neighbouring towns in Thailand let alone neighbouring provinces like Phuket and Phang Nga?
