Traveling in August 2014 - safe to swim? and which islands?

Hello TA experts! I will be traveling to Phuket in late August 2014 - I've been doing a ton of research on Trip Advisor, there is a ton of great info which just makes everything more confusing. We will be coming to Phuket from Bali last week of August for about 5 days. We want to avoid the nightlife and super touristy areas. I've realized that Phuket is pretty touristy... Best beach Kata or Surin?

Weather reports are all over the place. I understand there will be rain. But ALL day? And are ALL the beaches too rough to swim in? What about the beaches on Phi Phi Don and Koh Lanta? We also want to stay a night on Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Lanta, instead of just the day trip. I read ferries are not running to Koh Lanta until November - true? If so, what is the fastest way to get from Phuket to Phi Phi to Koh Lanta and back?

Thank you!!

Aneka

Yes it can rain, sometimes a little sometimes a lot, but swimming can be downright deadly, many tourists drown during monsoon season on Phuket. Sea tours can be cancelled or just unpleasant. If you want to guarantee swimming and calmer oceans think about heading to the west coast (Samui) instead. If swimming is not an issue, just get a hotel with a good pool.

Thanks, Cassnu. How are the Phi Phi lsland and Ko Lanta beaches around the same time (late August)? Better bet to go there instead of staying around Phuket proper?

Samui is Gulf of Thailand (east coast) whereas Phuket, Ko Lanta and Phi Phi are Andaman (west cost) with August being right in the middle of that coast's monsoon season which as Cassnu has pointed out is potentially unsafe, even deadly on Karon beach in particular on Phuket for swimming, and boat transfers. Even if you get to Lanta it will be mostly deserted and beaches not good for swimming. Phi Phi is more sheltered but is still a potentially uncomfortable sea crossing.

At least in Phuket people are warned to stay out of the water with red flags on the beaches, but there are also other colors phuketgazette.net/phuket-news/…21707

Sadly most if those who drown must be colour blind and deaf as they appear to ignore whatever warning flags are flying and the shouts of the lifeguards.

Being bang in the middle of our monsoon season, August is often the month with the best weather. It might not rain for the whole time you're here, or it might rain every day. But rarely ALL day.

Please be aware, though, that even when the sea looks calm, there can still be rip currents that can carry you away from the beach. This is what kills people every year on Phuket. It's actually easy to deal with one if you know what to do. There is some good information here - http://www.wikihow.com/Survive-a-Riptide

Any boat trip over open ocean will be potentially rough and uncomfortable and possibly even downright unsafe. Phang Nga bay is a sheltered area and a good choice if you're looking for islands to get away to - e.g. Koh Yao Yai.

Hope this helps :)

Hi, if you really want to swim then it would be better to change coasts you can devide the time between Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and or koh Tao.

I agree, if possible move your holiday to the East (Gulf) coast. This coast will be in its dry season and better for swimming.
