I cant speak from experience yet but we have booked a trip in November with the Santa Maria - 2 days 1 night. Apparently this sails around Bai Tu Long Bay - its run by columbus travel. This may be of interest to you? This sets sail from Halong Bay

I'm having a difficult time working out how to stay or even get to Bai Tu Long. I'd rather go there than Halong. Did you ever get to a good place in Bai Tu Long?

Sometime people get confuse about Bai Tu Long and Halong Bay. Halong Bay is only 1/5 of the area and is on normal route of any boat operator. You do not see the different between two area. But Bai Tu Long Bay is a really big area toward China.

Just for normal scenery and cruise, no big different aside from Halong Bay is packed with boats. Some boat operators runs trips both in Halong Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay such as Lagoon Explorer and Red Dragon's Pearl. To go further to bigger islands like Van Don or Quan Lan, you will need a charter boat from Halong Bay or you will need to take a bus to Van Don. There are local boat ferry to Quan Lan. Both islands have beautiful beaches and there are accommodation at ATI resort (basic though).

Santa Maria does not cruise IN Bai Tu Long, just a little bit in the between. Nothing special.
