What kind of gift to take for a homestay ?

I am wondering what kind of small gift I should take for the host/hostess when I do a homestay in the Mekong Delta. It needs to be something small as all I am taking is a backpack. Any suggestions are welcome!

Something I can think of are books for learning spoken English, small dictionaries bought in Vietnam, something about your country they can display on the wall and tell their friends “These nice people stayed here”, pillow cases, face towel, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, toys for children, hair accessories (ladies often have long hair), fabric enough for a blouse/shirt (there might be tailors living nearby who make their clothes), a set of spoons or chopstick, big bowl for soup (Vietnamese serve soup in a big bowl and everyone uses spoon to share to their own small bowl), dry mushroom half a kg (they can keep for long), snacks, cigarettes for men, wine or champagne, etc.

Some big items can be bought in HCMC (fabric, soup bowl) although I’m sure they love foreign gifts.
