Tipping

During the last two weeks we spent in Vietnam we found that the expectation for tips varied greatly. We stayed in the Novela Mui Ne where even the hotel guest information book states "tipping is wholly practiced for all staff" to the Novotel Nha trang where it was obvious that the staff did not expect tips (no hovering) . At a number of restaurants staff who were friendly turned cold when a tip was not forthcoming. It seems that tipping culture is going to be the norm in Vietnam in the future.

In the tourist areas.... yes. In the more rural areas mostly only in coffee shops and pool halls, and then they are small.

We were just there & it didn't seem like tips were expected in most places that we were. We just tipped when the service was excellent. We were asked for a tip once (really it was demanded). Just use your judgement, don't feel like you HAVE to tip.

Generally if you use 4-5 star services you will be expected to tip for anything you do. Staying in a 4-5 star Hotel or Resort flags you as wealthy and a person who is used to tipping. It is not a widespread practice and has the ability to skew Vietnam's economy. VN should grow its economy in an orderly fashion not spiked by tipping. By all means round out your change but only if you have received good service.
