vietnam itinerary

Hi all, would appreciate some feedback on my itinerary thus far:

29 Dec: arrive HCM and fly straight up to HANOI

29, 30 Dec: HANOI

31 Dec and 1 Jan: Halong Bay cruise (am hoping to find one doing some kind of NY celebration-any suggestions?)

2 Dec: overnight train to HOI AN

3-5 Dec: Hoi An and day trip to surrounds

6 Dec: Travel to Nha Trang for beach leg (best way to do this?) OR if weather not great, fly to PHU QUOC

10 Dec: Flight back to HCM

12 Dec: Depart HCM

Flights are booked, so am needing to pin down hotels because of peak season! Any feedback would be much appreciated. We're travelling as 2 couples, no kids, want to do some sight-seeing, a bit of history, loads of shopping and definitely some lazy days on the beach with drinks and massages! And hopefully we can return some day to do a month long trip and take it all in properly:-)

We have just returned, two couples. No idea what your budget is but in Hanoi we stayed in the Classic Street Hotel on Hang Be Street. It was a decent hotel, really comfy beds (not that normal in VN) and around $35 a night per couple including breakfast. We did haggle for that price though!

It's ideally located,a few minutes walk from the lake and in the heart of the old quarter but wasn't noisy at all. There are so many hotels, 45 on one street we counted so the choice is endless and from what we saw, a lot of the, are similar in both price and room style. The higher end, ie Elegance Chain get great reviews and have a few hotels in Hanoi but for us the hotel is just a bolt hole and I'd rather spend my money out in the streets.

Check up on Indochina Junks for your boat, they also get great reviews and maybe offer a New Year's Eve activity. We had dinner in a cave on Dragons

Pearl, one of their boats and it was a lovely two night trip.

Fly from Hoi an ( Danang ) to Nha Trang will save you a lot of time. Weather should not be to bad then.

"some lazy days on the beach with drinks and massages!"

Dounds like you will want to stay in the main tiourist area and hang out at the louisianne club. There are blind massage cerntres not to distant, that probably give the best massages in the City. Take a look at the hotel review section on this forum for some good hotels.

Thanks, this is great advice!! Owee are you referring to Nha Trang?? Has anyone been to Phu Quoc recently? Apparently, guaranteed great beach weather there... But I don't want to be in bed at 9pm every night!!
