You can take either but you should realise the complications that can occur. The currency of the land is Dong and is freely available by all ATM's across the country. If you use foreign currency, these are the disadvantages:

You will get change in Dong.

You will have to make instant calculations to see if the change is OK.

You have been identified as a tourist ripe for overcharge.

You will not be given special "good" treatment quite the reverse.

Some places will not accept foreign currency.

Could place yourself at risk once identified as carrying foreign currency'

ATM's and your bank of course charge you for the use of your card, but this should be recognised as a form of holiday convenience insurance. If you dont have a debit or credit card then get one you can load prior to travel, but be sure it will be accessible in Vietnam.

dollar or Sterling does not matter. Both are exchanged easily. Here is a link to more on currency issues owee58.com/2012/02/24/currency-exchange/

You should change some into Dong, which would be convenient for you in buying or using some services.

As you live in the UK there is no point getting dollars. Take Sterling, it was easily exchanged in cities to Dong. You can draw out some currency at the airport on arrival and there are ATMs in lots of places. If you pay for trips and flights etc on cards, you won't need that much cash as its very cheap to eat and drink if you are not heading for the high end restaurants
