Northern Vietnam 4 weeks with kids aged 8 and 10

Hi, We are arranging the above trip and would love suggestions please.

So far...Flying into Hanoi for 4 nights. Would love to do a loop to Sapa, but not as far as Dien Bien Phu (too far with kids) then down to Mai Chau, for 4-5 nights in a 4wd (any suggestions with whom?) We will catch the train to Ninh Binh for a few nights, then continue on the train to Hue, then Hoi An, then a finish in a resort on the beach for 6 nights. Flying out of Danang. (We saw Halong Bay, and a northern loop to Ba Be and Cao Bang by minsk last time so want to try somewhere different, but with kids this time!)

We are quite adventurous and dont mind roughing it a bit, and like to avoid large tourist buses and their stops... So...any further suggestions?

Thanks in advance :)

We are currently staying in the An Bang Seaside Village Homestay. Our kids spent a couple of hours this morning playing with local kids. We are in the Banana House. This house is on the edge of the property so it is easier for the kids to meet. Would recommend staying here, esp with kids.

Have a look at Phong Nha Farmstay near Dong Hoi. It's on the route down south above Hue and the caves there would I imagine be fascinating for you and your children who are old enough to appreciate it. The accommodation is great fun in my opinion, has a small pool and amazing views plus lots of animals walking past regularly. They do some good day trips from here and it is different to the other places on your places so far. Depends when you are going as the weather can affect your options but see what you think. Also, if you are quite adventurous, when in Ninh Binh get mopeds with riders to show you the sights. The roads are really quiet and its a great way to get around.

For Sapa, plan on a hike out of town. In Sapa town (and sometimes the surrounding countryside) YOU are the attraction because of your purchasing power, not the scenery. Sapa town can turn a lot of people off.

Try to do Sapa mid-week, and at least 2 nights homestay. We used Sapa sisters and had a great time.

There really are no good Sapa train times, so think about doing Hanoi first, Sapa second and then on return just slide onto the 6:15 SE 7 to Ninh Binh ...... you may want to look at going to mai Chau from Ninh Binh instead of Hanoi ....

I know its not the loop you described, but it is one part of the puzzle in using your time wisely.
