The last trip to Thailand we took we researched a lot on TA and posted a lot! Our itineraries tend to be adventurous and we heard a few times that we couldn't fit all we wanted in a 17/19 day trip doing Northern and Southern Thailand and we feel that we did just fine without compromising the trip or skipping things we really wanted.
Our trip highlights and what we loved most:
*Chiang Mai and a amazing tour with a personal guide, Jermsak, through Chiang rai hills and Mekong raft trip.
*Phang Nga area with the limestone rocks and cave tours. We did miss an opportunity to go on a 2 day elephant, tree house stay and want to try to find a place to do that in our future SE Asia trip.
*Didn't love the touristy part of Phuket, but stayed in a quiet resort and loved Phi Phi's beauty but really touristy!
*Canal tour through Bangkok
*Doing tae chi in Lumpini park and eating breakfast with the locals in the park (they were quite impressed with 4 tall Americans wanting to try everything we could buy at the local food area in the park).
We will have 17-19 days and we would like to do
*Angkor Wat and maybe Battambang. Being not HUGE all day, several day palace folks we are hoping 2 days at Angkor wat is sufficient and maybe 1 full day/overnight in Battambang.
(Read about Si Phan Don but unsure how effective we can get to and get out of there to hoi an)
(not huge beachy beachy people but enjoy it for a few days
*Fly to Hanoi and really interested in halong Bay, maybe 3-4 days (read about a slower paced less touristy Lan Ha Bay?)
*Luang Prabang (unsure how to get there if there is a flight) and the area of Nam Ha NPA sound amazing to do an eco tour, but need to research good one
If time, we hope to end the trip with a few days in Hong Kong before home.
Thoughts? We certainly loved the Mekong river boat afternoon with our personal tour guide on his own wooden raft where they made food for us on the back and we are unsure if all of Mekong is a similar setting and views as we don't want to repeat what we have done in the past, but if there is a certain part of the Mekong that is worth doing please let me know.
