Vietnam ATM charges - Mar 2014

Just about to leave Vietnam after 4 weeks and thought I would update on which ATMs were charging me for withdrawals and which weren't. For reference I was using a UK issued pre loaded Caxton FX (Visa) card. Not saying you will get the same results with your ATM cards (and it might be because was using a prepaid card) but worth a go... I was surprised by how many were free compared to when I was last in Vietnam. NB for all of these I still got the standard FX markup charges in the UK, below is about the levy by the Vietnamese banks.

Agribank - 0 fees (standalone ATM in Can Tho, max withdrawal D3,000,000)

Vietinbank - 0 fees (standalone ATMs in Hue and Hoi An, max withdrawal D2,000,000)

BIDV 0 fees (standalone ATMs in Hanoi, Saigon and Ninh Binh, max withdrawal D5,000,000)

ANZ D40,000 fee (used bank by Hoan Kiem lake, Hanoi, max withdrawal D5,000,000 - despite lots of forums saying you can get more out of these ATMs)

VIB D50,000 fee (used standalone ATM at Hanoi Airport, max withdrawal D2,000,000)

Useful information Grant - thanks.

Re the ANZ branch by Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi, the maximum withdrawal (obtained by pressing the 'Other' button and keying in the amount required) varies from day to day. On one occasion I got 10 million but the norm is 8 million. Only on Sundays have I found lower limits there.

For Mastercard debit they all charge from 30.000 to 50.000d, if they recognized the card.

Agribank should work with Mastercard but I haven't found any ATM in HCMC or Mui Ne, in HCMC no need to look for, Commonwealth Bank is free for ANY card.

Vietnam is a Visa country.....

Re the ANZ - this was a Monday morning around 10am. I tried both the ones at the front. Didn't go inside so didn't see if there were any others. May have been empty after the weekend

I think it all depends on your card and who you bank with - I've used BIDV 3 or 4x now across the country and so far no charge..

Excellent post from Grant UK.

What I find irritating is when people start talking about other topics.
