Two week itinerary for Vietnam in February

Please can you give me your suggestions for a 2 week holiday in Vietnam in February. We would like to take in all the main sightseeing areas and leave time for some relaxation on the beach in the south of the country at the end of the holiday.

Careful with the Tet holiday in Feb - major transport problems/higher costs

An excellent website for basic research into places in Vietnam that might suit your interests (there is no way you could see them all in just two weeks - you would need more than six weeks for that) is http://www.travelfish.org/country/vietnam .

Happy researching!

Do some research on what the holiday period of TET means to Vietnamese and you will see how it will impact on your decision to travel in Vietnam during that time period.

eg prices sky rocketing to triple the normal price all the way to no seats at all on all forms of transport or no vacancies in hotels and also businesses being closed up for the entire holiday period etc

It really is that big an event and there is no equivalent to it in the western world.

Xmas, NYE and Thanks giving day in USA don't come anywhere near it for impact on normal travel.

Thanks for the advice. Would it be OK to travel day after TET holiday is over - we have chosen February as we thought it would be best for weather.

Dear Madam,

February is spring-great weather for traveling. It is also Tet holiday in Vietnam, you will have the opportunity to know about traditional Lunar New Year and foods in Vietnam. Although it is quite difficult to book hotels and transports on Tet holiday, if you are ready for trip, you can book now.

You have two week in Vietnam; thus you will have a great trip:

Day 1: Hanoi Arrival

Day 2 : Hanoi full day city tour

Visit Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Museum. Enjoy the architectural and historical aspects of Uncle Ho"s final resting-place. Just next door is Ho Chi Minh's house on stilts. Continue to visit the Quan Thanh Temple ( Taoist, dating from the Ly Dynasty ) and Buddhist Tran Quoc Pagoda on West lake ( One of the oldest in Vietnam ).

After lunch proceed to visit the Ethnology Museum, continue to visit the Literature Temple and Quoc Tu Giam. LadyWillow, the above is a perfect example of the ridiculous, breakneck itineraries beloved of rather too many local travel agents. Halve the number of destinations and you will be closer to a workable plan.

Re Tet, the travel difficulties caused by that holiday aren't restricted to the three days of Tet itself but begin a few days beforehand and continue for many days afterwards. That and the closure of shops, restaurants, markets and many attractions apart, Tet isn't an interesting time to be in Vietnam as the normally vibrant street life is absent because everybody is at home with their families.

In any event, February isn't the greatest month weather-wise, or at least not in the north as winter will not have drawn to a close there. If you can postpone until the second half of March you should strike good weather everywhere.

Many thanks for your advice. Unfortunately, we are unable to travel in March - what would the weather be like in January. We would like to spend a few days in Phu Quoc at the end of the holiday so would obviously like it to be hot and sunny!

Many thanks.

Cold in the north and possibly drizzly, cool to chilly in central Vietnam (the amount of rainfall is anybody's guess), but hot, dry and sunny in Phu Quoc - a good place to end your holiday!

Now that you have shifted your visit to Jan drop everything north of Saigon.

Spend a few days in Saigon then 3 days on a tour of the Mekong. Fly from Can Tho to Phu Quoc island and spend a week there in glorious weather enjoying the cheap seafood available there.

Fly back to Saigon spending your last night there so you dont miss you flight home.
