Custom made ao dai/women's clothing in HMCM/Can Tho for man

Hi. I'll be in Southern Vietnam (HCMC, Can Tho, Mekong Delta) in a few months.

I'm wondering if anyone here can recommend a tailor who can make ao dai for a reasonable price (decent quality, but not too expensive). Would it be real silk? How much for one of those pretty plain white ones ? What about colored ones?

The thing is, I'm a man. But I do want to get a regular women's ao dai. Would this cause any issues?

Also, can one get a yem made (traditional Vietnamese women's undergarment)? How much would that cost?

Also, any other suggestions for traditional Vietnamese women's clothing I could get made? (not something like empress's clothing, just pretty clothes, preferably silk). What about modern, Vietnamese style clothing(not Western style; something sophisticated and Vietnamese inspired, preferably silk).

This wouldn't cause a stir since I'm a guy, right?

TIA

One of Vietnam's most popular and much loved comedians wears a Ao Dai on television all the time. He actually looks better in Ao Dai than in normal mens clothing.

Ao Dais require several fittings and are quite complicated to get into.

The pure white ones are reserved for school girls and your desire to wear one of those could be viewed as offensive.

Stick to black velvet with embroidery and two way stretch material rather than the less forgiving silk.

I spent 10 years as a designer in the fashion industry in the 70s and I think Ao Dais are the most elegant attire a woman could wear.

There are several tailors specialising in making Ao Dais. You can buy the fabrics opposite the Tan Dinh Market in Hai Ba trung Street District 1.

The fabric houses will put you onto a tailor for you.

Thank you very much for your reply. How long would it take to get one made? I understand that the velvet is easier, but it's really my dream to wear beautiful silk ao dais. this is both for the look and feel.

Thank you for telling me about the white ao dai; that would certainly be inappropriate!

I want to get a few ao dais made. Any idea on approximate costs, time frames, difficulty etc.?

Here are a few samples that really stood out for me:

xemhaynhat.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/do…

and from this link, both the yellow ones (with black flowers) and pink one (with multi-colored flowers) tinhotnhat.net/anh-ao-dai-nu-sinh-viet-nam-p…

Are the flowers and the such part of the fabric, or does the tailor add those ?(sorry, I know very little about dress making).

I'm wondering if the fact that a Western man wearing the Vietnamese national clothing for women would be offensive. How would people react to me getting this done? (or is it just about the money, as I suspect it probably is). I don't want to insult anyone.

Will the tailors be able to understand that I want it to be women's style and not men's style?

Also, what does a woman normally wear on her chest under her ao dai? Is it a bra or is it a áo yếm?

I'm also wondering how I could go about getting some áo yếms (like these http://www.welcometovietnam.asia/vietnamese-yem.html). Is the áo yếm strictly underwear, or is it worn as a top in some situations? How could I get them/where, how much would they cost? etc

Sorry for all the questions. Thank you for your help

I asked my Kim and she says 14 days is normal from start to finish and anything less you pay accordingly.

To be honest I think you will have language problems conveying you want a woman's Ao Dai and not a mans.

2nd unless you a stick thin you are going to look tragic in them.

I wish you the best of luck but fear you are going to be disappointed with the results.

Hmm I only have a couple days. I read about places that are 1-3 days; I'm sure they're for tourists. I will be in Vietnam for just 2 weeks. Maybe get it measured on my first day, leave for the delta to travel around, then spend the last few days in HCMC, or do I need to be available throughout the weeks?

Would ones in the pics I posted be super expensive or somewhat affordable.

Would it be possible to find out about the ao yem? Can the same tailor even make them?

I am not stick thin; so that's a bit disappointing to hear. It's been a bit of a dream for a while to wear an ao dai (specifically a woman's). I still want to try.

I'm wondering how I can communicate that I want a woman's style.

Also, would you recommend any other Vietnamese women's clothing that is pretty (preferably silk) that would be nice? (Something beyond the normal, everyday pajamas-like clothing).

Is there anything else that goes with the ao dai pants?

Thanks again for the info. You've been helpful.

I hope i'm not being too unreasonable or insensitive by trying to get women's style clothing.

Just looking at the flowery ones, the yellow one appears to have the flowers embroidered onto the fabric, while the pink one's flowers look painted on. Whether they have panels available which are already pre-embroidered/painted, to make up into ao dais, or whether they are custom done after the ao dai is made up, I can't say.

A friend of mine makes ao dai in Vung Tau. She told me she can knock up a basic tunic and trousers in a few hours for 400000 vnd and a top of the range outfit can take a 2-3 days and run into 4 million but this is only limited by the complexity and quality of fabric.

She specialises in doing uniforms for hotels and restaurants ,but also does wedding outfits and customised orders etc.

Sorry ,lost her number with a change of phones but Ill be back there in 10 days.

ross m, thank you.

could you ask your friend is that's for silk or another fabric?

Also, how much does she think the yellow ao dai and pink ao dai in these pictures would cost? (what kind of fabric are they etc.)

Thanks!
