Routes and Options on the Junks

Trying to decide on which junk to take for 2 days and 1 night, not based on price, but on the following:

1) Do all the junks follow similar routes around the bay, and if not, which goes to the best spots.

2) Seems you have to decide on either going kyaking or visiting a fishing village. Would like to do both. Do you need to choose or are there junks that allow you to do both.

Thanks

Hi,

My parents and I spent one night in Halong bay a couple of months ago and can say that what you've observed is true. Most junk boats go to similar places during the day and drop anchor in bunches in the evening. We visited the Surprise Cave in the afternoon of the first day which was a tourist hell and we found it hard to listen to our guide.

We're heading out to the South next month and decide to splurge a bit this time. As we'll be flying out from Hanoi, so we'll visit Halong bay again and are looking at the Bhaya cruise, just want to have a different experience. We were informed that we can only visit the floating fishing village since kayaking is excluded, but it doesn't seem to be a big deal.

Good luck

Cherrie

Indochina Junks (Red Dragon, Lagoon Explorer..etc) cruise differently, deeper and further to Bai Tu Long Bay.

The rest of the junks cruise on the same route and overnight at the same registered area.

Their itinerary has both visiting the fishing village and kayaking (included in the price).

Just back from Halong Bay with Pinta Gold cruise. Excellent staff/food but was completely disgusted with the rubbish in the water. Disappointed that the option of trekking was promised but never offerred. Annoyed by the "compulsory" nature of having to sing to entertain, was universally disliked. Some may like this kind of thing but we all paid for a World Heritage Site natural wonders cruise not an embarassing after dinner mint.I am sure the Tour Guide was just as embarrassed.
