Alternative to Bangkok

We're due to fly to Bangkok in early May from Hanoi. Obviously due to the ongoing unrest there we are unsure as to whether to change our plans. At the moment we're looking into alternative options.

Would anyone have any suggestions on where is easily accessible from Hanoi? We'd be looking to go for about five days and preferably out of Vietnam as our visa will have expired.

Depends on how much time you have to spend. We will be spending 23 days in Vietnam and will be missing places.

Yes I would give Bangkok a miss for the time being.

As SF mentioned HK,KL,Singapore are your best bets from Hanoi and then easy to get home. All more expensive than Vietnam and Thailand but good for shopping.

If you haven't been there that is the perfect amount of time to go to siem Reap and visit Angkor Wat, 3 days there and then a day or two in Phnom Penh

Another alternative would be Luang Prabang

Yes, Angkor Wat would be perfect or Singapore would be my next choice. Very hard to beat but Singapore is pricey.

I would say, that Bangkok is safe and will be safe for tourists - you just should not go to the places, where the demonstrations take place. Bangkok has many other opportunities than those places. Of course it can happen, that demonstrators occupy the Airport... But even then you can organize yourself a Bus- or Taxi-Transport to another Airport - for example Chiang Mai or Phuket in the South to get out of Thailand.

But from Hanoi it's also easy to get a plane to Chiang Mai in the north of Thailand. With is old town inside a wall, its temples, its markets, its hotels and restaurants and National Parks in the mountains with splendid nature and hill tribes around the town, Chiang Mai offers many pleasures and possibiliities for discovery. You can get some impressions here:

The alternative option ( easily accessible from HN ) can be Laos, Luang Prabang, Vientian. Then if you have time, visit Cambodia. Thailand maybe not suitable at this time.

Good luck!

Thank you all very much for all the responses! Out of all the places named we've been to Kuala Lumpur, Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Chiang Mai, and Phuket in the last few months so preferably we would go somewhere different.

Of the others mentioned Singapore would probably be pricier than we would like. We don't know much about Hong Kong; would this be in a similar price range to Singapore?

In relation to Laos - Luang Pranbang and Vientiane - how would you get across to these from Hanoi? How long would it take overland? We have looked at flights to Laos from Hanoi and they're not cheap!

We have looked at the option of flying to Jakarta via HCM; would anyone know much about this option?

Preferably we would have gone to Bangkok but even though it may be safe to go and just stay in certain areas we don't really want to do this. We would like to feel safe to see all the sights that we had earmarked.

Our flight home is from Bangkok so we will need to get to Bangkok anyway the night before the flight so we have to go somewhere that Bangkok is easily reached from by air.

Basically what we are looking for is somewhere that isn't too expensive to reach, is relatively cheap when there, doesn't take too long to get to, and is easy to travel on from to Bangkok.

Sorry for the length of this post! Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
