Too broad a question maybe? When are you going, what do you like to do, how long do you have, and its a hell of a way by train between the two cities...have you considered flying to miss the 20 hours of travel?

If you have lots of time on your hands then I would think the train would be a great adventure. It is a long way in the train so of course there are many places you can stop - you need to start your research using this link;

And the train is not a hop-on-hop-off affair, you have to decide where you want to get off and buy a ticket from HCMC to that destination then another ticket from that destination to Ha Noi.

Be prepared for discomfort, take your own food and toilet paper.

" take your own toilet paper"

That is true for Vietnam in general.

The train is too painful/boring/time consuming - only use it for short hops

We usually take the night train. Sleeper car will replace the hotel room for the night. Definitely get off in Danang and take a short trip to Hoi An. It is our favorite place to wonder around on rented bicylces.Easy, friendy, walkable.

Check out Dong Hoi, going from there to Phong Nha to the Paradise caves. It's a bit remote but a great place to see before it gets too touristy...

Or learn to use the hose. I'm thinking after 5 Asian trips that their way is actually better than ours!

Lol, Thanks for all the Tips. lol.

will be flying into siem reap and out of hanoi, or vice versa, havent decided which way to travel yet, but am planning on 3 weeks this time. having stayed mainly in cambodia last visit, and only taking in a 3d2 night stay to hcmc, want to spend time in Siem Reap, Hcmc, and Hanoi.

want to do the night train to hanoi/Hcmc, and make a 1 night stay on route, just to experience the culture, ie, markets, hustle bustle, still baring in mind will want to stay close to the station/city i stay at.

So thinking, 5-7 days in siem reap, to see temples, bus to PP (i know it takes around 3 hours) for 2/3 nights, then bus to Hcmc (again, 3 Hrs) for 2-3 nights then train journey up/down to Hanoi, few nights there and few nights in Halong bay on Junk??

any ideas would be most apprieciated.

Many thanks,
