I'm in Vietnam for a week to 10 days in late April/early May. I'd like to see Hanoi and also do a beach. Does anyone have any recommendations about where to go and the split in timing?

Thanks in advance.

You're going to have to travel a long way.

There are no good beaches with tourist infrastructure in the northern half of Vietnam so you'll have to fly to Danang (for Danang itself and Hoi An) or Nha Trang. Mui Ne is out because you can't fly there and you have insufficient time for overland travel, and Phu Quoc Island is too far.

If you are fixed on staying in the north, then the closest beech is not really a beach at all, Halong Bay. Go to Halong bay for 2 days on an overnight boat cruise, well worth it. . Then go to Sapa by train for 2 days. Then spend the remaining time checking out Hanoi. If you really want a beach, you can get a cheap flight down to Da Nang or Nha Trang.

Hanoi 5 days and Hoi An/Danang 5 days

you could do an open jaw flight itinerary LHR-Hanoi and Danang-LHR (Asiana, Korean or Cathay Pacific)

Skip the beach and see more of the country. Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa or Ninh Binh will easily fill your time and have lots of adventures to offer. Beaches are beaches, you can do that anywhere IMO.
