What to do at Hanoi Railway Station

I was wondering if there is anywhere at Hanoi Railway Station to safely leave luggage or that is safe and comfortable to wait (a few hours) for our trains. We are a family of four with 2 children (ages 11 & 13). I see on the Fanxipan website a 'Rest Stop' but not sure what that is. Really appreciate any advise. Thank you.

As in any Viet RR station there's nowhere to safely store luggage....unless you take turns watching each others. If you have to check out early consider paying for extra hours to stay at your hotel...they may have an hourly rate.

Nothing much to do nearby also.

It's safe to wait, but not really comfortable. Snacks and cold beer is sold but nothing else to do. Better leave your luggage at the hotel and take a taxi to the station in time.

VN stations have few if any creature comforts - do as others say, pay for 1/2 day at a little hotel nearby. You could walk up to the Cathedral square and hang out at one of the many cafes. Your kids might enjoy that since there are many children in that area - an elementary school next to the church. (walk up Hang Bong and hang a right on Ly Quoc Su)

If you do not have a hotel.

Fanxipan restop is good choice. You can leave your luggage here, and when you come back from Sapa, you can take a shower and rest here although you do not use Fanxipan train.

The staff is friendly and helpful.

Thank you everyone for your reply.

We arrive back in Hanoi after a Halong Bay cruise at about 4.30pm, so we wont have a hotel. Thinking of getting the 7.00pm to Ninh Binh so we will have enough time for a bite to eat before we get the train. Will be a pain with baggage but will just have to manage.

Then we could get the 5.58pm back from N.B that arrives in Hanoi at 7.26pm, then wait for the 9.10pm overnighter train to Sapa - so once again time for a meal (:-( with luggage). Am I trying to travel too much on single days?

Sorry, we mean to spend 3 nights in N.B. and 1 or 2 in Sapa.

Think you need to downsize the luggage thing - why do you need so much anyway? With a medium backpack most of your problems would be solved, anyway. You will be very unpopular if you try taking large cases aboard the Lao Cai bound train - there's little space and those compartments are tiny. A good hotel in Hanoi will hold your extra luggage/packs at no cost.

Thank you everyone for your advise. Contacted our Hanoi hotel and yes they are happy to store our luggage so we will just take what we need in a smaller bag.

Cheers

Chris
