Someone in our forums bought a ticket for 5 US$ to go to town in District 1. Look for that counter inside the terminal.

15 US$ is too much.

The airport is too close to town, so take a Mai Linh Taxi you see somewhere around there and go with meter. I think only Airport Taxis are allowed to park near the exit way.

Hi Viet,

Do not bother with hotel pick up. As soon as you clear custom and immigration, before the airport exit you'll see tha Sasco's counter, buy a ticket there( 5$UD for a 5 seater and 7$US for 7 seater), one of their staff will accord you to the car.

$5USD is definately the rate! However if paying in Dong be careful, my friend got into District 1 and the driver told her it was 800,000 dong, she thought that seemed a bit much, but the bloke was very convincing. It should of been 80,000 but they will try to put one over you especially if it is first time in the country and you are unfamilair with the currency conversion.

We still laugh at the fact she got burnt so bad! But can see how it can happen,,,

I paid USD$5 for the taxi to get me to Pham Ngu Lao in D1. That was the rate back then in June 2007. Maybe now increase...as petrol prices increase.

Rule of thumb, always make use of taxis (not limos) at the airport. If hotel is not providing transport, but charging for hotel-transfer, it is usually cheaper to pay a taxi to bring you to your hotel. It's always the case.

BTW, I paid USD$7 (running meter) from Cholon back to District 1. I'm sure the taxi was rigged bcos the same trip to Cholon, I paid only USD$4. When I complain to the driver, he spoke in Vietnamese trying to shrug me off. I paid him anyway when he drop me at D1. In Cholon, it's hard to get those taxi which bears the Saigon company name.

What I don't understand is why pay a fixed USD$5 from airport to D1 when I can go for a meter charge from D1 back to Airport. My last trip returning to airport cost me only USD$3+ by meter.

Simon,

Paying 5US$ will save the nerve for first timers. If running by meter, the driver may take a longer route or add another 0 like in the story J&M just told us.

I myself always go by meter.

U're right Landpremier...for the peace of mind, just pay fixed price of USD$5.

I had actually wanted to offer the driver to take me to airport from Pham Ngu Lao at a price of USD$5, but an idea crop up so I told him to go by meter, just wanna see the difference. Alr prepared to pay USD$10...but hmm...after getting stuck in traffic at Hai Ba Trung...and when arrived at the airport... was surprise only USD$3+.

Taxi fare in Vietnam is still way lower than any comparable cities...worst ever was in Cairo. The taxis are so battered, no air con, old cars (Peugeot cars...you cant find such cars in Asia)...and it cost over USD$15++ to get to the airport.

Just got back from HCMC.

The counters outside the customs (to the right after exiting customs) were charging me US$10 to District 1 (Ly Tu Trong).

So I followed the tip of one poster here to walk across 20ft. from the front where Vina Sun/Vina taxis were waiting. It was not a long walk at all. I was quoted VND80,000 or US$5.

Also, the 2nd money changer on the right side (configuration of the counters on the right side is like this: 1st car rental, 2nd car rental, 1st money changer then 2nd money changer, then a Tourist Information Center) had a higher exchange rate than the 1st counter as it was not charging any commissions. I initially had $20 changed for taxi fare as I thought exchange rate would be higher in the city but it was comparable to the latter ones we went to afterwards.

Of course if you are just arriving and have all the luggage taxis are a good thing, even at $10usd. But in case it's of any interest - if you are returning and just have a few hours between flights and want to head in to the city, then you can take a bus (assuming you've left the bag at left luggage).

Took me a while to find it. The stop is opposite the domestic terminal. A green-ish city bus (not a mini bus) number 152. Goes down De Tham Street and costs 3000 vnd.

However ... it is not so easy to catch it back to the airport. Where oh where is the bus stop going the other way! Anyone know in case I go back one day!

Thx.

Theshoemakers,

>>>The counters outside the customs (to the right after exiting customs) were charging me US$10 to District 1 (Ly Tu Trong).<<<

This counter offers something like private car service. Same thing as in Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok; they offer 1,000 Baht but if you know where to catch a taxi, you pay around 250 - 300 Baht by meter.

Regarding exchange rate for USD to VND, I think if you change in a bank counter in the airport, the rate you get is the same as that bank (same name) is using in town.

Nitarudi,

I took that #152 bus a few times to eat in the backpackers area. One time it took me a while to figure out where it stopped on De Tham Street but I can’t remember exactly the Bus Stop.

One evening around 8pm I took it from Le Loi Street and the driver cut the route shorter. He skipped De Tham Street. I guess usually no one waited for the bus at that time on that street.

What I’ve done were:

1. Took it on Pham Ngu Lao Street the nearer part to New World Hotel.

2. Took it at Ben Thanh Market Bus Station.

Here’s the copy of their route going to the Airport:

Công trường Mê Linh- Tôn Đức Thắng- Nguyễn Huệ- Lê Lợi- Bến Thành- Trần Hưng Đạo- Đề Thám- Phạm Ngũ Lão- Nguyễn Thị Nghĩa- Cách Mạng Tháng Tám- Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai- Pasteur- Võ Thị Sáu- Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa- Nguyễn Văn Trỗi- Phan Đình Giót- Trườn Sơn – Sân bay Tân Sơn Nhất
