Tet 2013 - where to dine/see the celebrations?

We will be in HCMC and want to have a nice dinner on the lunar eve. I understand a lot of places may be closed - any recommendations for dinner and/or where the best location would be to observe some of the celebrations (we are staying at the Majestic Hotel).

Best place to observe the celebrations is on the street, not tucked away in a restaurant. Otherwise you won't see much, except maybe the fireworks. The Rex hotel overlooks Nguyen Hue Bld, where they set up the main display area in District 1. flickr.com/photos/… It also extends out towards Dong Khoi and up beyond Notre Dame cathedral. In this part of District 1, each evening you will also see (for about 4 days) various groups performing.

But Tet is a family occasion. Unless you actually get invited into a Vietnamese home during it, you'll stay on the edges of the celebrations. Go wander on Tet eve and mingle but do watch out for pickpockets i.e. walkabout light. Sometimes it is a crush.

do you know what days are the main Tet Days? We will be in VN and want to be sure to be in HCMC for the special Tet Days (fireworks, etc).
