ATM scam

Just to warn other travelers of what happened to me when trying to withdrawn money from an ATM on Pham Ngu Lao, center of backpacker district. After inserting pin code and selecting the amount, the card came out, no money or error/unauthorized message. My bank just warned me of a suspicious transaction with that amount, and I already cancelled the card.

Basically the atm is acting as a payment terminal, you select the amount and instead of withdrawing money, you're paying. I don't know if this is common in HCMC. The atm was standing inside a shop next to a Citybank atm, but unfortunately I don't remember the name of it. When I return to HCMC I will check it to warn other people of this scam.

1. Re: ATM scam

The problem in PNL area is that EVERY ATM is inside some shops...

even Commonwealth is in a minimarket K..

it was off line and another one in PNL was not giving out money.

So far all ATM at 2 million very useless...

#OP not remembering the name of a "problematic" ATM is not helping...

There are 2 banks in PNL road/bui vien and 250 ATMs......

Jim I used to only go at ATM inside banks but now banks are going online...

This thread should be closed if no REAL info will come.

For HCMC good news is Commonwealth ATM are widespread, I saw at least 4, no bank of course, it is in Australia ^^__^^....

To my mind, there is something not quite correct with the OP.

It matters not if you use an ATM inside or outside of a bank.

An ATM is an ATM and your "card" is either accepted, rejected or "swallowed".

But if the machine is inside the bank chances are slimmer that someone tampered with it.

8. Re: ATM scam

For "Skimming" a card data, perhaps.

But it is not possible to alter the internal electronics of an ATM at the ATM for card transactions as they are not made at the ATM but centrally after passing through many algorithms.

There is still something either missing or not correct about the OP.

A few years ago while in HCMC, I too had the misfortune to have this happen. Basically the ATM still charges you 20k dong even if it fails to get authorisation to dispense cash. I found out later, that at the time of my trying to get cash, my own UK bank systems went off line for a couple of hours for maintenance. I got a receipt out of the ATM saying the transaction was void but still showing a deduction of 20k for ATM use.
