Cambodia in April??

We will be travelling to southeast Asia in April; the timeframe isn’t flexible since we want to go during our teenaged daughter’s spring break. She’s really interested in Cambodia, but I’ve read that it can be really hot and uncomfortable there in April. Any thoughts on that? If not Cambodia, what would be a better option at that time of year?

I’d appreciate any input/advice!!

Hi HBers & welcome to TA,

Cambodia in April is HOT .. really HOT but if that's when you can travel don't let the heat stop you. Just make sure you allow yourself enough time to include pool time each afternoon - racing through in 3 days would be a mistake - there is so much to see.

A hotel with a pool in the shade is a must (for us anyway) - ones in the sun end up being like a bath at this time of the year and are not at all refreshing.

We've been before in april and are heading there again in April14.

check out www.canbypubications.com and www.travelfish.org for good info, make use of the top questions (upper right - this screen and the SR home page)

The search box (sometimes missed by newbies) is fantastic - gets access to all other posts on any topic or key word (just like a google search) - look for trip reports (aka JBRs (just back reports) I hit these first when researching a new holiday destination because they are so full of great info

If you post a tentative itinerary there will be plenty of regulars who can help you fine tune it.

Hotels are used to organising deivers and/or guides (you can visit without a guide - we like this way - wander and absorb - othr liske the security and info of a guide - your choice)

cheers

helen

Thanks, Helen. If it were just my husband and I going, the heat wouldn't stop us. But with a teenager coming along, we're trying to minimize reasons (excuses) for complaining. =) After some research, we've decided Cambodia will have to wait for another time, when we can travel at a different time of year. This time, it's going to be Northern Vietnam or Shanghai, where the weather is a little more palatable. But thank you for the advice!

Advantage of the heat is that there will be few other tourists. Just get up really early in the morning and see the temples from 6am to noon everyday. Or maybe 6am to 10am and 4pm to 6pm. Spend the rest of the time in air-conditioning or a pool.

David, that's great to hear! Where did you go in Vietnam? Was there anything in particular that your daughter enjoyed?

In Cambodia her favorite place was Kampot/Kep, the main reason for this was because we all hired mopeds for a couple of days , did the trip up to Bokor which was fantastic , also rode to Kep & surrounds. A lot of people would advise against letting a 13 yr old on a moped in a foreign country but we took our time and had some strict ground rules, we met a lovely family from Phnom Penh on the way up to Bokor and they insisted we sat with them and shared there lunch and drinks, a memory I will hold in my heart for a long time. As for Vietnam the highlight for all of us was the 10 days we did on the back of motorbikes from HCMC to Hue , an experience not to miss and we are now trying to plan a return trip and do a different ride with our good friends, perhaps in the north. Any questions don't hesitate to ask. Happy travels

If you decide on Cambodia - January is the perfect time because it's neither the rainy season nor the hot season. And since most people are staying home after Christmas and New Year's the flights are easier to get - and cheaper. Same with hotels. And less crowded.
