Booking Tours Once we arrive

We are planning a trip to Cambodia & Vietnam. Looking thorough travel brochures some of the short 1 day or 2 day tours seem very expensive. We were thinking of booking flights and accommodation and then just booking tours once we arrived. Is it easy enough to do it that way and will it be cheaper, also is it safe..

You are definitely much better off booking when you arrive. In Cambodia, you will find it very easy to find a tuk-tuk driver to engage for the whole day, for around $15-20 (depending on times and distances). They will ferry you around the local city sights etc, wait while you look/eat/shop/photograph etc, and get you back to your hotel.

Its been a few years since I was in Vietnam, however, back then you could try your luck with the cyclos drivers (some more trustworthy than others). Otherwise, over on the Vietnam forum you will find many reviews about various travel agents (Sinh Cafe comes to mind!). Prices are way way cheaper "in country" than at home!

PS - ditch the brochures and keep browsing TA ;)

Every thing that TN says about both countries is right, ditch the brochures and wait to you get their and just chat with your accommodation or Tuk Tuk drivers, very easy. Just have an idea of what you actually want to do and it will all fall into place and yes it is safe , just be sensible!

Just to reiterate - read the forums!!! Each of these countries do have their opportunistic scammers who will try to take advantage of the unwary traveler. In Siem Reap, particularly this is the "milk scam" (or sometimes rice for the poor)...in other Asian cities, there are various stories of tourists being befriended, invited into their home, sick mother, play cards - WHAMMO give me all your money!!

Familiarise yourself with what things should cost, and what are your options on getting places. This can vary greatly between 'local' buses, taxis and air/boat travel. Know what your visa entry options and costs are - where possible, have correct/exact money.

ALWAYS negotiate or confirm prices (particularly with transport) before you get in or start....don't fall for the "you pay what you think when we finish" (only to be told you are ripping them off and they need $100US in Vietnam >.< )
