Off the beaten path ways to explore Cambodia and Angkor Wat?

I don't want to explore Cambodia in the typical touristy way (tour bus with 20 people). What are some off the beaten path tour companies/operators that allow you to see more of the rural side of Cambodia? I'm also looking for a private local tour operator for the one and only-Angkor Wat. Any suggestions?

Easiest way is to plot a route, take a local bus to each town, when you get off the bus hire a tuk tuk driver to get to places you are unable to walk to. To get you started on some ideas for itineraries have a look at Canby Publications and travelfish.org You can do a search on the forum for JBR's (just back reports) to see how others have spent their time. Arranging travel in Cambodia is so easy - there is really no need for a tour company of any type.

I agree there is no need for travel company but also understand some people prefer this way of travel. Check out www.seecambodiadifferently.com and links for canny and travel fish that the above has supplied.

check out canbypublications.com/siemreap/srstarted.htm

and +1 for getting out to Koh Ker .. fantastic! A day trip will cost you around $100 for a car & driver

There are other options for getting to koh ker and if you have someone to receive you on the other end that knows where to go, it makes for a very interesting day if you're tired of the crowds at Disney Wat.
