Nursing Volunteer

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has had any experience in nursing volunteering in Cambodia and can recommend any organisations or programs to use? Thanks

HI Bexx ... I recall a few posts on this topic over the years - if you use the search box directly above your post you should be able to locate them. I assume you're looking for some kind of 'longer term (a couple of months or more) stay - short term positions are a bit problematic given potential language issues.

good luck in your search.

Hello Bex3,

If you are a general nurse and without adequate spoken Khmer then your opportunities are very limited indeed.

If, however, you are a paedriatric or other specialist nurse then things get a bit better for you IF you are prepared to commit to an organization for several months or longer. Short term medical volunteers are a burden to most organizations and not worth their effort in most cases.

Generally speaking there is not a shortage of General Nurses in Cambodia but definitely a shortage of specialist qualified nurses.

In addition to which, just like in Australia, your formal qualifications will need to be recognized and approved by the KH Ministry of Health before you can legally practice nursing in Cambodia. This is normally undertaken by your host organization. It takes a minimum of six to eight weeks to obtain approval so things need to be well set up in advance.

Best regards. Ian
