food places catering for backpacker prices.

When I was in Sihanoukville the prices for food were really cheap. I'm struggling to stay within budget here in Phnom Penh

I don't eat alot and therefore just look for a snack. Where can I go that offers cheap food. I don't mind it being cheap quality either as I'm looking to save as much money. Things seem to be alot more expensive here including the drinks.

It's simple.

Get breakfast and mid day meal in any of the markets and eat with the locals.

Great fun and very fresh food. Cheap and healthy.

All you have to do is open your eyes and walk around...there is no shortage of cheap eats and drinks in Phnom Penh. As Ian said, eat at the markets...don't be afraid to try and experience new things/cultures.

I eat at the markets if I am there for lunch, or little local shops, just go down the side streets and you will find something. No English, no menus, but you can point to the grilled chicken/duck/fish etc and you wil get that with rice and a couple of side dishes. As Paul said above you'll normally not pay more than 5000 riel for such a meal.

To the OP - Question: What do you actually consider "Backpacker prices"?

I have noticed that backpacking is certainly not what it used to be. All backpackers are carrying smartphones, ipads, laptops, their parents' credit cards...I guess it is more flashpacking than backpacking.
