What currency to use in Cambodia?

Hello, I am travelling from SIngapore to Cambodia. Considering that the price quoted for everything (trying to looking up online) in Cambodia seems to be in USD, would it be best to take money in USD as well as Some KHR from Singapore? (What about restaurants/tuk tusk etc. will they accept USD?)

What is the main currency used there? Also, can you share some info regarding ATMS - easily available/ can we withdraw USD?

Is it better to take USD from Singapore and have it converted to KHR at a currency exchange?

Thanks for your help!

Hi,

US$ are used and accepted pretty much everywhere. You'll find ATMs in all the major towns and they dispense US$ as well. Don't convert any currency to KHR as you don't realy need it and will get enough in small change on everyday dollar transactions.

Either take US$ from Singapore or us the ATMs.

Cheers

Further to Paul's spot on advice, you cannot exchange KHR anywhere out of Cambodia, so try to spend any you might have been given as change before you leave.

It is also very useful to have some small USD notes as many places won't be able to change big notes.

Yup exactly as Paul says, don't change anything into Riel, just take a bit of US to get you in the country (visa, taxi form airport, bottle of water) and then change your Singapore Dollars to US at a bank, or use the ATM's.

If you're flying in to Phnom Penh, there's an ATM that dispenses dollars before the visa counter. So you don't need to bring anything with you except your ATM card! I've written a page about using dollars versus riels, and currency in Cambodia: movetocambodia.com/about-cambodia/currency/
