Just did this via VIP bus. They say 11-12 hours, but from hotel pick up at 5am in Siem Reap to Don Khone hotel arrival at 8.30pm, it was more like 15! Certainly was an adventure, especially when the air conditioning on the bus broke down around Kratie.

Not possible by boat.

You can take either minibuses all the way (change at border), separate local buses (change kratie or stung treng, minibus from border again), or get to stung treng and get on the direct Sorya lines bus to pakse.

We will be doing the same in April ... can anyone confirm if we can get the lao visas in the border ? I read lots of mixed reviews about it, so what's accurate : visa on the border or we have to do it in Phom Phen or at home ? Thanks and have a good trip :-)

Most nationalities can get visas easily at the border.
