An organised tour or on our own, what would be best?

We are two middle aged ladies, but fit and adventurous, planning a trip that includes Laos.

We have about two weeks to spend there, arriving from Perth WA and leaving for Kunming China in late December 2014.

I have been looking at escorted tours and find they range from USD2000 to USD3000 each which, upon checking hotel prices seems like quite a lot.

They do include a couple of internal flights, tours, accommodation, driver and guide but I am wondering if we just try the 'do it when we get there' approach will we be able to manage ok?

Can anyone suggest reputable tour companies/drivers/guides for us to use in LuangPrabang, Vientiane etc and will we have enough money to do it all for the same as the tours?

Sorry to be so long winded and thanks for any help,

Jackie

Just wing it, it's more exciting jumping into the unknown is what we do every trip. Mind you i just troll through Trip Advisor or Lonely Planet Thorn Tree first to get the basics. Have fun.

We just book the first night accommodation online with airport pickup to cut out the hassles.

I agree - just do it yourself and save a couple of thousand. There are many agents here if you want to have some organised trips once here. You can book all your internal flights online and there are hundreds of guesthouses to choose from rather than be put in one of the tour agents choice.

we are doing that with our adult sons as concerns vietnam, angkor, luang probing.

I would check in a dance the airline routings you want as we have found several of our flights to have limited tickets.

So it may depend on how much flexibility yu have given the minimal transport infrastructure..

Do it yourself, it is easier, more fun, and you do what you want to do, and not what other people say you should do. Also, you have more flexibility. If you like a place, stay a day longer. You don't like a place, leave sooner. You do not have the same flexibility if you use an organised tour (it would be my biggest nightmare travelling that way.

Travelling in Laos is dead easy, slow but easy. You can easily organise trips when arriving, you can book accomodation in advance, or like me during my last trip last month, and turn up at places and check rooms etc.

Check this forum for some popular itineraries (do not add too many places), check flights (Bangkok might be the easiest option for overland travel by train or bus to Laos, but flights to the border of Laos are dead cheap as well).

Another good source is www.travelfish.org - it gives great advise about most places in SEA.

And obviously, I am sure most people on this forum will be able to provide advise and feedback if you have an initial plan what you want to see.

Oh, and you might also find, that planning your own trip will build more excitement for your holiday. I actually love planning my trips...

Thanks so much everyone.

I see the consensus is to do it ourselves so that is what I will do.

A cursory look at transport and accommodation etc on the net makes me think it will cost less than a third of the quoted tour and be more flexible and fun.

That's a lot of dollars saved that can go on some extravagances on the way!
