Travelling by land from Vientiane to Siem Reap

We are looking to travel from Vientiane to Siem Reap next week overland, the cheapest and most efficient way possible.

Ideally, we would like to go via Thailand, as I think it's less travel time and cheaper?

I have read there was a bus leaving Vientiane into Thailand at 9am then we need to swap at Khorat to continue to the boarder.

Has anyone done this recently and knows the updated bus timetables and boarder operating hours? Is this possible in 1 day?

Alternative options also greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot!

It is a long journey, so I would suggest adding one or two stops.

You could take the night bus from Vientiane to Pakse ((more than 10 hours, so you could save a night accomodation), and then either do one or two nights in Pakse, Champasak or 4000 Islands, and then take the bus to SR. You will have to change bus once to SR (Kampong Cham), and it is a long journey (around 15 hours).

Do it in one go without flying would be very evry long, and you would miss out some of the nice places in Laos.

We did half of this trip last week, but in the opposite direction, from Siem Reap to the 4000 Islands in Laos.

Just to let you know if you plan to go the Cambodian way, about 300km of road on the Cambodian side is in the middle of major roadworks due to some crazy potholes caused of the delay in the end of the rainy season (flipping global warming!).

Between Siem Reap and Kratie (a town you'll bypass) it should have taken approximately 6 hours including a change of bus in Kampong Cham, but instead took us 11.5 hours of bumpy, bumpy roads.

If you do go by bus through Laos and Cambodia, get the night bus from Vientiane to Pakse (10 hrs), then a morning bus to Kratie (10hrs) or Kampong Cham (13hrs) in Cambodia and stay the night, then another morning bus to Siem Reap (4 hrs) so you can sleep on your arrival day to properly recover.

I hope there's a better way through Thailand for you.

If you just want to get to SR and don't want to see anywhere en route I would go through Thailand. Nightbus or train to Bangkok then morning bus from Chattuchak to Aranyaprathet to border, then bus or $30 taxi from Poipet at the border to SR. About 20 hours total but you can sleep well for half of it.

Then to the Aranyaprathet/Poipet Border

Can be done in 1 day
