Where to go in Malaysia

We are a family of 4 travelling to Singapore, train to KL and then we would like to go either Lankowie or Sabah and visit one of the resorts there. We don't know which one to visit . 2 teenage girls 15, 14. Would love to go to Sabah to see Orangs but heard you may not really see any,Langkawi ? heard both are beautiful. Girls like snokelling, husband fishhing and me golf and diving and snorkelling. We are going early October so could be intersting weather but we are aware of that. What do people suggest?

Langkawi is 98 small island clustered around one larger island. Langkawi is beautiful . . . . but that is it. There is golf, not sure about fishing but no good snorkelling as the water is not crystal clear, no real diving. There is not much else going on, most go there to chillax, one small town. A 14 / 15 yo [being that most unentertainable age] will probably find it deadly boring.

Sabah is a province, and much, much larger than Langakwi. Kota Kinabalu is a 3 hour flight from Kuala Lumpur. There is much more choice, and yes there are the orang-utans. You can go to see the younger ones at the sanctuary that is part of the Rasa Ria hotel just north of Kota Kinabalu, and you will 100% see them. If you go to the larger Sepilok sanctuary at Sandakan (30min flight from Kota Kinabalu) you may not see them, but you just might do, as the orang-utans are nearly wild. There is also a proboscis monkey sanctuary at Sandkan. Fabulous beaches, great snorkelling, diving, golf - so ticks all the boxes, plus more to do for the girls.

Another option is to do Langkawi and Penang - Ok, you won't get the diving and the snorkelling , but there is Orang-utang island at Bukit Merah Laketown http://www.bukitmerahresort.com.my/ about an hour from Penang. You can easily get from Penang to Langakwi. You can also get the train up to Butterworth and then head over to Penang.

Flip a coin, but having had 5 teens, and having grandchildren slowly getting to that age, I would be tempted to head to Sabah . . . . .
