*Another* Which island?

Hi,

My wife and I have been looking for around a year (Just as we were about to book for Jan18 we fell pregnant with our second and decided to postpone). We originally had a throw up between Vilamendhoo and Angaga but just couldn't decide and everytime we looked we found more and more!

If anyone could give some advice or throw some recommendations in the ring it would be greatly appreciated!

1. What time of year you intend to travel and how many nights are you staying?

We are aiming to visit for 13-14 nights from 28/01/19

2. Which type(s) of transfer (Seaplane, Speedboat, Domestic flight) do you prefer? This question is also related to how remote from Male and the airport you prefer to be located.

We don't mind which transfer, seaplane would be nice for the story.

3. What size of Resort Island do you prefer?

We don't really mind as long as it isn't HUGE, my wife really just wants somewhere that has a lovely quiet beach that won't be too crowded she can just sunbathe and relax on.

4. Do you want to be able to snorkel (or dive) on a house reef which is accessible from the beach of your Resort Island?

I would really love somewhere which I could spend a lot of time snorkelling with a nice reef. If it has somewhere to dive I would maybe look into doing a 1 day dive thing but it isn't a huge must

5. N/A

6. What is your preferred board basis? We are preferably looking to go All-Inclusive with somewhere that does Cocktails!

7. What type of accommodation do you prefer? Preferably would like an overwater villa with a Jacuzzi which faces out to the sea (this is my current issue with Vilamendhoo)

8. Do you require a child-friendly Resort Island or prefer a Resort which is adult-only or has some form of age restriction?

We don't mind kids but would like somewhere that isn't too loud.

9. Do you have any specific wishes regarding activities, excursions etc?

I would really love somewhere which has a decent chance to see Manta Rays and Whale Sharks, this was our main draw to the South Ari Atol - but if there are other good places then great!

10. What is your budget?

We are looking for around £10,000gbp so £5,000 each which included flights/transfers etc. £10,000 is our top end we can push slightly over but would rather lower so we can also do some stop overs at Dubai etc.

Seriously any help on this would be amazing, we just want to make sure we pick the best place for a big trip!

Cheers,

James

I have been to Angaga 3 times and love it it seems to meet all of your requirements. Only downside is lack of dining options.

Are you taking the kids with you if so a WV might not be an option as usually WV will have age restrictions for safety reasons.

Your budget should give you quite a few options you could look at Veliigandu for JWV. Oblu helengeli, Reethi Beach (I don’t think much of the WV here deluxe beach is probably a better option)

The New Reethi Faru May also be worth a look.

The whale shark / Manta might be an issue Angaga is good for whale sharks but I don’t think the other islands will be as good you may get Whale Sharks / Mantas from the other islands but may need to dive instead of snorkel.

Another suggestion if you can get it within budget will be Mirhi this is highly rated and is very close to Angaga

Hi,

Take a look at Veligandu it may fit the bill, or talk to one of the Maldives specialists that are frequently recommended on here to see what you can get that matchs your budget and wish list.

Ahh thankyou for the suggestions I'll look over them now!! Our trouble was Vilamendhoo fitted what I wanted (aside from the jacuzzi) but my wife didn't like the narrow beach so loved Angaga bjtnibv not jacuzzi to unwind at night looking out at the sea!

No kids! Leaving them with the grandparents for a much needed break!

Veligandu's JWVs are virtually the same as the ones at Vila - except that they have the hot tub to the side (not the back as at Vila) and they have shutters which you can open if you want to see the sea view.

However, Veli does not have as good a house reef and is also not as close to the South Ari whale shark channel.

Check out the WVs at Vakarufahli. We've got one booked so have not been yet. There is a large tub (inside) but next to a floor to ceiling window that might meet your needs.

I think otherwise it meets your needs.

We're just back from Vilamendhoo, and the narrow beach isn't a problem. It's quite wide around the adults only end, where they put the 'free use' loungers.

If you're staying in an over water villa, you won't get your own bit of beach, but that's not a bother.

And do remember that it's very warm there, so you'll be looking for somewhere to be sitting in shade, rather than out in full sun.

The lack of view from the jacuzzi will still be an issue, but we found we rather liked the little private garden out the back. We're not jacuzzi people, though, and only really used it as a place to dry our snorkelling gear. Most of our time was spent along the reef, which was really very good!

We were looking to Veligandu next, which does fit your bill too, but note that they are no longer adults only. We thought we'd wait until after they have been family-friendly for a bit to see what the reviews are like before we book it.

We have been to Vilamendhoo and Angaga in recent years, and are returning to Angaga in November - whilst we enjoyed both islands, Angaga is the nicer experience in my view. One of the main draws of Angaga is it's sheer beauty, a proper postcard Maldives island with an amazing lagoon to swim in. We really missed that in Vilamendhoo, the sea was too shallow inside the reef to just relax in and bob around for an hour or so, but Angaga has a lovely lagoon inside the reef that is calm and a nice place to swim. Both should have access to Whale Shark and Manta Excursions too, although it is better to dive for Manta's, than snorkel.

Hi everyone, thanks again for your suggestions! Do you guys think it's best to stay in the South Ari Atoll for the best chance of seeing Whale Sharks and Manta Rays? As this will likely influence our decision the most.

Regarding the Jacuzzi...I just love the idea at the end of the day at night just sitting in a Jacuzzi/plunge pool looking out to sea with a glass of wine!

I'm just in the middle of googling the new suggested places!

Exciting!

Whale Sharks - south Ari absolutely.

Mantas are a bit more all over. South Ari and Baa Atoll are both well enough regarded. I've also seen them in the Male Atoll.
