Komzndoo, Dhiggiri or Athuruga?

Hi - We are thinking of going to one of the above islands for our silver wedding in April 2007...but which should we choose?

We're not into lively nightlife, but just want small, relaxing with good easily accessible snorkelling (and sand floors, or else I feel cheated!)

Only spending a week as we will be on Atoll Explorer for 1 week. Have been to Velavaru before, which we enjoyed, althought the fishlife seemed a bit sparse, so we want somewhere different this time. Any advice? Thanks!

Komandoo is small, boutiquey, nice accomodation, small island and excellent snorkelling. We went for our honeymoon three years ago and it was amazing. They now have watervillas too Also when we went there were loads of sharks and turtles to see when you snorkelled of the beach to some parts of the house reef - but it was a couple of years ago? Hope this helps.

Hi PureShores... all your 3 islands has approx 45 rooms each....

Komandoo - rooms constructed of wood, dark varnished on outside and light coloured inside - has a scandinavian feel. Last time I went (2004) you could see the next room but I would imagine the vegetation between rooms has grown somewhat and it should be ok now. Beach few steps from the verendah. Snorkelling is excellent and accessible. It is a small island and romantic. You can take a free trip to nearby island, Kuredu if you find it too quiet. 40 mins or so by seaplane.

Dhiggiri - small round island. It is a partner to Alimatha which is a gem of a resort (but food reputed to be pricey). bungalows have some over water. Although the ones over the water has a good size sundeck it does not offer privacy. Theres a nice house reef. Usual amenities (inc dive school) on offer but little entertainment. Normally travel by speedboat of 120 mins but the Felidhoo channel where this island can be very rough so if you are prone to seasickness try and request a seaplane. Island not as upmarket as Komandoo.

Athuruga - Not been here personally but I believe it is an AI resort. It has sport amenities. Its 25 mins by seaplane.

Hope this helps and it's probably confused you even further! ... activegirl

PureShores... may have misled you there.. the 45 mins by seaplane is from the airport not from Komandoo to Kuredu! ...activegirl

I can only comment on Komandoo, and have recently returned from visiting it. Komandoo is a lovely small island - took me 10/15 mins to walk round. The bar was quiet and the service fantastic. I also thought the spa was wonderful!

I didn't wear shoes all week, there are sand floors in bar and restaurant, so I don't think you'll feel cheated.

The snorkelling was great, a short swim to the house reef where between us we saw a turtle, octopus, stingray and countless different fish. There were also reef sharks which we saw from the jetty but not whilst snorkelling.

Hiya - we absolutely loved it! It's tiny, but really pretty, and laid back. The staff are attentive and friendly. We went specifically to dive, and were not disappointed. The dive school were amazing - very professional and well organised. We're newly qualified, and each time we went out, we had a guide just for the two of us. We liked the food, the Bungalows were pretty, island is spotessly clean. There is daily evening entertainment which we could either be involved in, or sit outside and have a quiet drink if we didn't feel like it -We made loads of friends. Depends on what you're looking for, but if you want somewhere that isn't over commercialised, and 'desert islandy', its perfect! I couldn't believe our luck at finding the island, and are actually considering going back! If you want more info let me have your email address and I'll email you back.

Hello Grace 200,

Sounds as if you had a wonderful holiday - - - we have recently visited Velavaru and although we had a truly marvellous time, we missed having an in-house reef close by. I used to dive, but the old ears are not too happy with the deep nowadays. Oh the joy of middle years!!!

I would be very pleased if you could e-mail us with you thoughts on Komandoo as we have booked to go next January and any extra info. is always useful. We have booked an ord. beach bung. as I don't really feel the extra cost for a jacussi is worth it - would rather spend the saved cash elsewhere. Which are the b. bungs, and on which side of the island? I'm also hoping that although we nolonger dive, the d. school might take us out to more outer reefs. Can't believe I have been so forward in booking for next year, but gather Komandoo gets full quickly - - usually leave most things to the last moment.

Our e-mail is boothjones@onetel.net.

Look forward to hearing from you,

TIGGY>
