New categories for "Complete Maldives"

That website is brilliant for ascertaining size of island, number of rooms etc, but maybe could do with some information dealing with concerns so often expressed on here.

For a start:

Wristbands?

Tablesharing?

Within sight of rubbish island?

and of course, kettles in rooms?

.

Any more suggestions?

1. Re: New categories for "Complete Maldives"

Is it not maldives complete? As opposed to complete Maldives?

Anyway, I think it's an excellent site, I am not sure of the cost section though,,,what is that feb 15 cost or what does it include? I am sure it must explain it somewhere.

Anyway, hopefully Bruce takes this thread in a positive way!

I thnk table sharing is a good one,,because that would put a lot of people off an island ( although I know some like it!!) and it could very well be a deciding factor.

You are right Froggy, it is Maldives Complete, but if you google Complete Maldives it does take you there anyway.

Some of the islands on the site are listed as 'seaplane' flights when they are actually domestic flight transfers. Two examples of this are for Shangri-la Villingili and Robinson club. The pedant in me wishes to point this out.

Apart from that I think it a brilliant site and I use it especially to ascertain room numbers and size of island. Also I like the 'previously known as' info, as islands often change names.

Accessible house reef/or not, would be a good one to add.

I do appreciate the ideas. Most of the site has developed organically from people asking me questions about the Maldives. When I get enough of them, I try to roll it into the site.

One of the things I have tried to do it keep it relatively simple. To make it easy to navigate and get to information quickly and easily.

Turquoise is absolutely right about the plane transfers. It's just that there are so few resorts with domestic flights, that I never bothered to distinguish hem. But I think I will change the label to 'Plane' so it incorporates both. If I try to distinguish between them, then I just take up space for a few odd examples. If I keep it to 'Plane', then you know you need to take some sort of plane.

The cost thing is really tricky. Prices are all over the place depending on who is quoting you and when (ie. how close to trip). I wanted to get the 'cheapest room category during the most expensive period'. I chose 'Feb 15' because that was a pretty common peak period. It varies, but at least it means that the 'prices' are comparing like with like date wise.

Also, I originally researched 'Half Board' rate, but the new 'Room Type' data does 'RB' or 'B&B'. When I find quotes for FB or AI, I try to make some rough adjustment for the value of the extra board and amenities. Again, it is all rough especially as a price can vary dramatically with a promotion, etc. It is just meant as a rough guide to help people filter for around their budget.

I do have a crude 'House Reef ' grade on there. I have been thinking about enhancing it given how big of a deal it is for many visitors. My biggest challenge is trying to think of an objective way to get comprehensive data to populate the house reef assessment if I extended it.

Miss Fitts ideas for inclusion are great, but I have never aspired to get into too much detail. The resorts' own websites and Mondo Maldives are better for detailed information about the resorts. It was always meant to be a place that had the most important stuff so people could filter the 120+ resorts to a more manageable short list that they could then research in more detail.

One of my aspirations is 'completeness'. I don't want to add a field like 'table sharing' and then not have any information available on it for most of the resorts. Frankly, armbands, table sharing and 'rubbish island' views are very rare (just a few resorts) so might be better to just do a TA thread to try to identify and capture them all. Kettles are increasing uncommon (mostly lower end resorts) so a TA thread could sort that as well maybe (or someone with some time to trawl through Mondo (which actually 'lists 'Coffee and Tea Maker' which increasingly likely to be Netspresso machine).

I hope that this helps.

Thanks,,,so, would we say 15 feb cost is an indication of half board in lowest room category,,,for what a week or two?

It is actually a very good site and very easy to use. We should really point people to it more often on here, or maybe link to it on the faqs ( where is sun lover when you need her?) or maybe it does already, not sure! But it should be pointed out to people starting from scratch or comparing islands.

Bruce, sorry for cheerfully suggesting extra things for you, and I can see that too much detail is counter-pruductive. Your reply is much appreciated.

Maybe we can have a TA list compiled and passed on to SunLover for FAQs. I am sure she would be thrilled. Darryl, Ian et.al, surely you have some suggestions?

MF - Don't apologise. I really appreciate the input. If I get a bunch of people asking for it, I probably would add it (you are the first). I do think since the list is likely to be fairly short, that compiling it on TA would be a better approach. I haven't added more on 'Children' on the profiles, because the TA FAQ is so good on that subject (I just point people to that).

Froggy - Sorry, to clarify. On the 'Resort' profile, the cost is for a week, HB, Feb 15 including flight from UK. This is because I got my original info from UK operators on these costs back when I started. The new 'Room' profiles is the cost for RB Feb 15 per night. I have been thinking about reconciling them. But when people think about trips they often think about the total weekly budget (hence the 'Resort' cost). But, when you get to the 'Room' level it's harder to derive that. Most of the data comes from the resorts' own website, but those a rack rates and often higher than one could get from an agent or operator. Sorry for the complexity, but the costs (and getting data on them) are rather complex and this is the best I have been able to do so far (especially since it's just a hobby).

Actually it's very good and does not need to be an exact science, as I am guessing its just a cost indicator.

Don't be offended, but I would say what it is somewhere, as its actually quite useful information...or maybe it does somewhere?
