Which island for end of April with restaurants or shops

Can anyone recommend somewhere that has independent restaurants & a few shops to browse in the evening or is that not available? We would prefer to stay in a smaller hotel or b&b with a pool & would like to snorkel. We are only staying 5 nights.

The resort islands are one hotel per island and any bars, restaurants and facilities are part of the hotel. There may be a gift shop, dive shop, jewellery shop but that's about it. If you want to snorkel at the resort island you should check that it has a house reef, otherwise you have to go out by boat.

For independent restaurants, shops etc you would need to stay on the capital city island of Male - but no one is going to advise you to do this!! Tourists don't stay there unless they really have to.

The other option would be to stay in a guest house on an island where local maldivians live but you do this on the understanding that you must adhere to muslim restrictions - modest dress that covers your arms and legs at all times, no access to alcohol or pork products and no open sunbathing/snorkelling unless the guest house has private facilities to allow you to do this (or else by excursion). Shops will be few and the islands do not have the same idyllic picturesque enviroment of the resort islands.

The only resort that might give you access to a few more local facilities is Equator Village on Gan.

As the others have said, the resorts are one island, one hotel concept so all the facilities, shops restaurants are operated by the resort.

You could opt for the local island guest house but totally different kind of experience.

Kurumba as a Resort has plenty of restaurants to choose from. Yes they are run by the resort but a least you have a great choice and if you book BB then you can eat wherever you like. The coffee shop is good value for money but you have plenty to options. They have two boutiques and jewellery shop and you can visit Male the Capital easy enough as they have Male shopping 6 days a week so you could book on this one morning or afternoon if you really want to go to the Capital although there really isn't an awful lot to buy.

The Maldives really isn't the destination to come if shopping is high priority, for this you are better of going to Dubai, singapore or KL.

I'd got for kuramathi, on select ai, so you eat at all the restaurant, or lux, if budget will stretch, same concept.

But as everyone has said, it's one resort one island, so everything on there is owned by the resort and even the big islands you can walk round the whole thing in thirty or forty mins. You need a bigger island, if you want one with its own pool. No resort island has independant shops or restaurants. The hotel owns everything on the island.

I would not bother will male, very little there, and what is there is not great.

Once you've spent a couple of hours, you won't want to go back.

If its shopping etc you want, nefertari is right, pick Dubai. You can pick bed and breakfast as your board option in most resorts, but eating and drinking is very expensive, so you need to really do the math.

Staying at a guest house on a local inhabited island is a whole different experience, although cheaper, you need to conform with the local sharia/ Muslim law, and the local beaches do not look like the picture postcards you see at the resorts.

We just got back from Lux and we loved it,it is a larger island so you get a sense of more space, more to do.Larger still is Kuramathi which is only 4 star (just remember no room service there). There are several other large islands too,Sovena Fushi,Reethi Rah and Shangri La V (sorry can't spell that one!) and Island Hideaway, these 4 are all more expensive than Lux and Kuramathi

These are all resort/holiday islands..
